Squirrels & Cake 2015

Six cars set off from Tesco Westhill at 0930 on Sunday 24 May with the aim of spotting Red Squirrels

at the Jack Drake Alpine Nursery at Kincraig.  The weather was initially dry so the roofs were down

although they had to go up later in the morning when we encountered some rain!

The route headed west via Dunecht and a number of "yellow" roads towards Corrennie, Tornaveen

and Muir of Fowlis before reaching the Glenkindie area where we were soon hustling along the wee

roads on the south side of the River Don before popping out onto the A944 shortly before Corgarff.

Scott cut the corner at the sharp hairpin right near Candacraig House and clattered his exhaust but

fortunately no harm was done.  We stopped at the Old Fire Station in Tomintoul for a bacon roll

before tackling Bridge of Brown, Nethy Bridge, the Loch Garten yellows and the back road from

Inverdruie to Kincraig where cake and refreshments were taken on board.  Sadly, the squirrels

decided to keep themselves to themselves although we did see a Woodpecker and various other

small birds.

Suitably fed and watered, we made our way north via Feshiebridge, the old A9 to Aviemore and

Carrbridge and on to Dulnain Bridge.  Our tour of the car park in Carrbridge amused the locals but

meant we omitted the back road to D/Bridge!

The B9102 alongside the River Spey was as enjoyable as ever as was Glen Rinnes and the back road

into Dufftown.  The first half of the Cabrach came next  followed by the lovely road above the River

Deveron leading to Glass and Huntly. A quick sprint past Gartly forest took us to Insch before ending

the run on some small roads through Chapel of Garioch leading to our final destination at Morrisons,

Inverurie.

The pace was brisk but not outrageous and everyone enjoyed themselves, perhaps with the

exception of Helen who wasn't feeling 100% on the day.

It was good to welcome Steva on his first run.  As he was grinning from ear to ear all day, we can

conclude that he had a good time and we hope to see him on future runs!

Good run and cakes were up to spec. No squirrels but heyho.

Aye, shame about the squirrels!  There was a Greater Spotted Woodpecker, though!  Glad you enjoyed the run. Steva said it was the most fun he had had in a long time!  We were back in Inverurie just before 4pm.

It was great meeting you all yesterday. Had a blast!

I'll see if any of my pictures of the run are worth sharing...

Can't wait till the next.

I took more pictures on the way home than during our drive, but the scenery is pretty similar.

Hope you like em.
