The October Weekend

Day One – 3rd October

Well here we are at the end of another year of planned drives & it all seems to have gone so quick. Meeting at Sainsbury’s in Strathaven on a brightening day with the sun coming out, the makings of a good drive ahead looked on.  Welcome to Harriet & James in their Mk 1 on their 1st run following James moving to a job north of the Border & also to Andy accompanied by his Staffador “Alfie” who just turned up for the run through to Girvan.

Fuelled up ready, greetings all done, 15 cars set off heading cross country to Girvan for the lunch stop.  Taking the B743 we headed for Muirkirk then onwards briefly on the A70 then back onto the B743 to Sorn then down to Auchinleck before using the A76 down to New Cumnock then the B741 to Dalmelington.  The start of the B741 road is not the best of surfaces so we doddled along for a bit before being able to get back to enjoyment level.  The roads were almost deserted as we progressed onwards through Straiton, Dailly and on towards Girvan, with Ailsa Craig coming into view as we came off the hill.  Taking the outskirts road around Girvan saw us arrive at Woodlands Bay Hotel where Margaret & David and Eddie & Sandra were waiting for our arrival & lunch.

After an extremely filling lunch, one of the best we have had, it was time to set off again for the final stop at Lockerbie.  Before heading off, Rodney (& his son?) joined the convoy for part of the run before peeling off later at Crocketford.  Heading back towards Girvan we took the A714 down to Newton Stewart which was a bit slow to start with due to a Volvo holding us back but after a few straights, we were able to get past & increase the pace.  A lorry later on split the group but we sorted this on the outskirts of Netwon Stewart before taking the A712 up to New Galloway then down to Crocketford.  From there we mixed with the Saturday drivers heading for Dumfries and beyond, eventually taking the A 709 for the final run in to Lockerbie.  A quick regroup and 16 cars proceeded to the Dryfesdale Hotel in convoy.

The Dryfesdale Country House Hotel

With bags in hand & check-in completed, some relaxed in the lounge whilst others went for a stroll.  Unfortunately Susan & Alan needed to head homewards, gutted that they would not be able to stay for the night and tomorrows run itinerary.

For dinner at 1930 we were provided with our own room – they must have known we would be “talkative” & kept us separate from the other hotel guests.  After a lovely 3 course meal, coffee & shortbread, we moved to a side room to have the “Wattie Quiz” - 4 teams competing against each other & this year the questions were to be easier to allow more “flattering” scores.  The winning team went away with the tin of Quality Street but this was shared to all.

Having had all that fresh air on the run, a lovely meal followed by the banter of the quiz, it was time to retire for the night with a mid morning departure set for after a leisurely breakfast.

Day Two – 4th October.

A late breakfast for all & check out completed, we departed the Dryfesdal e Hotel mid morning on the quiet roads heading to Ecclefechan then Kirkpatrick Fleming before turning northeast on the B6357 for the Borders roads towards Keilder, taking the A6088 at Hobkirk over to the A68.  A few cars we came upon slowed us up but with the twisty roads, there was little opportunity to pass.  The sun which was with us on leaving the hotel was now hidden from view and the scenery that we had during the recce just not available today with low overcast cloud prevailing.  Reaching Jedburgh for the lunch stop we were joined by Moira & Gordon who had “popped down the hill” on foot to meet us.

Following lunch at the “Carters Rest”, we all returned to the car park to say our cheerios to Wattie & Janet and Harriet & James who were heading off home for other commitments.  The remaining cars set off for the next stop at Moffat, waving our goodbyes to Moira & Gordon who by this time were waiting at Jedburgh Castle for the convoy to pass.

Heading along the B6358, through Denholm then onto Hawick before taking the B711 we followed a Toyota Landcruiser for a few miles before they pulled off (we actually passed this car again on our way north from Moffat – such a coincidence).  Now on the A708 we had a clear run down to Moffat although some bikers going the opposite way appeared to want more road for their drive over the undulating “humpy bits”.  Heading for the Esso garage to fill up for the homeward leg, we then parked the 12 cars at the Moffat Mill for a final coffee & chat.  The line up of the cars drew plenty of glances from those passing through on foot.

Ian & Irene headed off on their own and the remaining convoy set off along the A701 to Broughton then over to Biggar then onward to the end of run at the Inn on the Loch, where we said our goodbyes to all and headed off in varying directions homeward.
A total run of around 320 miles covered over the 2 days, most with the sun shining and little wind. Most of the roads were quiet with little traffic to hinder progress & I think we enjoyed a brisk pace on most roads.  The lunch venues & hotel catered for us well & by all accounts it was a great success and fitting way to end the year.
Our thanks to Wattie, the “Quiz Master El Supremo” for taking on this roll once again & making it easier this year for all to achieve higher scores.  Thanks also extended to Jim & Maria and Drew & Ali for taken the mid convoy and tail end positions just in case others went astray.
We both hope you all enjoyed the outing, the choice of roads, the venues and most of all the social company & banter that makes it so enjoyable.
Thanks all for being there.  Roll on 2016!

Thanks to Marcia and Raymond for allowing us to join you in the South West corner of your drive. Mathew(my son) and I certainly enjoyed the roads and the fact that we were not held up much and allowed to enjoy what mx5's are about. Mathew old tightened his grip once so I put this down to my good driving. See you all again in 2016
