The Ayrshire Run

Sunday 17th May 2015

16 cars and occupants met at Sainsbury's Strathaven on a wild and damp morning including several new faces.

We decided it was dry enough for a hoods down start and headed along the twisty and bumpy road towards Muirkirk, unfortunately the rain and hail (it is May isn't it??) came back with a vengeance forcing a quick stop for roofs up.  We continued along towards Sorn only slightly held up by some temporary traffic lights! We managed through the crossroads and traffic lights at Mauchline with only one gap and after a re-group we all made it to Gemmell's to find another 4 cars and occupants waiting along with a delicious choice of filled rolls, scones and drinks.

One car headed home at Gemmell's leaving 19 cars to set off towards Ballantrae, again hoods down, although this only lasted for a few miles, via Ayr (where we negotiated the traffic and roundabout very well, through Maybole (where one car headed home), then past The Trump Turnberry hotel, through Girvan to Ballantrae for a brief comfort break.    Here another 2 cars headed home, so the remaining 16 set for the final leg, hoods down, to our late lunch stop.

We headed along the back roads through Colmonell, Phinwherry and Barr towards Straiton, along roads that varied from newly surfaced smooth to potholes and craters, which we all mostly managed to miss. We encountered very little traffic, though the cow walking down the centre of the road on the top of the moors was a surprise and the very nice milk tanker driver who reversed several hundred metres to let us all pass was very nice. The rain came back so it was time for roofs up again. From Straiton we had a good run over the tops to Dalmellington, then up and over again heading towards New Cumnock. We all made the turn onto the Boig Road, however further on a the fork to Skares the group got split with 8 cars heading off towards Cumnock for their own mini-run. Fortunately we made contact via the mobile and the 2 groups successfully made it to The Coylton Arms where one of the cars which had left us at Ballantrae was waiting.

Coylton Arms

We all enjoyed a wonderfully meal with great choice and prompt service. We had a raffle raising £95 with prizes spread throughout the group.

Thanks to everyone for attending and the support and assistance from Jim, Maria, Iain and Angus.
