Excellent day out thanks to Greg and Jean. Rivers, lochs and dams and even a bit of the day with the roof down. The good thing about bad weather is that the waterfalls are in fine form. Add to that coffee breaks, a 2 hour lunch and good company, perfect.

The Glens Run

Sunday 26th May began dull, damp and cold, but the Hi-5s set of from Inverness at 10.00am heading for Beauly and Strathglass. A small party of just four cars with tops up, we headed out along the old A9 (nowA862) and about half a mile before Beauly we branched left towards Struy. This road was very quiet and at its twisting best for driving so in no time at all we turned into the car park at the Cnoc Hotel for a welcome cup of coffee and a good chat.

A few hundred yards after leaving the hotel we turned right into Glen Strathfarrar where we almost immediately had to stop at the gate to collect our passes. As a safety measure because of the length and remoteness of the glen and the ruggedness of the mountains, all vehicles have their registration numbers recorded and only 25 visiting vehicles are allowed into the glen at one time. Each driver is issued with a pass and once the limit of 25 is reached no other vehicle is permitted through the gate until one of the 25 comes back out of the glen. This is also used as a means of eliminating indiscriminate camping.

The twelve miles of road through the glen as far as the Monar dam, is not for fast driving, having a mixture of 30mph limits and large potholes over a considerable part of the way, but the scenery is quite dramatic, even on a dull day with low cloud. On reaching the dam we got out and stretched our legs, admired the view and returned to the cars fairly quickly, because the temperature on the exposed hill side had dropped considerably.

On returning to the gate we handed in our passes and continued our journey along the quiet, twisting single track road to the village of Cannich which is in Glen Affric and   on to  Tomich which is hardly even a village, but it        has an hotel/pub which serves very good food, particularly Sunday lunches. After about two hours of eating and chatting, we set off on the next part of our journey, which was only about five miles, to the Plodda Falls.
These falls are very spectacular, consisting of a free    fall of almost 100 feet over a cliff edge, set in a beautiful forest and on Sunday, because of all the recent rain, there was a lot of water flowing over the edge.   

  The 15 mile drive back from Cannich to the Beauly
junction was great fun because the road was very quiet and it is an almost continuous series of bends the whole way - a splendid end to a great day.
