The Erskine Hospital Run

Sunday 30th March 2014

It was a dreich Scottish morning when thirteen cars met up at Stirling M9 services for the relatively short run to Erskine Hospital to hand over our fundraising cheque collected from our 2013 raffles. When I arranged the run, I had failed to realise that it was Mothers Day and that the clocks went forward an hour that morning, meaning an early start for those from further afield. So apologies to all – I promise not to do it again!

When I asked the gathered masses that I needed them to choose what each wanted for lunch so that the order could be phoned through to the hotel (due to Mothers Day), there were some grumbles that ‘we have just finished our breakfast’ and ‘I need to feel hungry before I order so that I can look forward to it’. However the list was soon completed and we were ready to set off. A couple of brave souls put roofs down but most were waiting for the sun to come out.

So off we headed towards Dunblane and Doune, stopping at the Invertrossachs Road junction at Callander so we could regroup. The weather had improved a bit so it was roof down for me but I am not sure if others followed suit behind me. Onwards to The Dukes Pass and Aberfoyle, when after a mile we came to warning signs advising road closed ahead. After the initial shock and reading it properly, I breathed a sigh of relief when it said that the road was closed on weekdays for repairs - phew could you imagine trying to turn round 13 cars on a single track road.
The Dukes Pass was next and this is certainly a great road for a spirited drive in a 5 with some lovely scenery for the navigator to look at as well. Passing through Aberfoyle, we turned off the A81 and headed to Gartmore and up over the hills on the single track road to Drymen. The mist came down blocking out the view and the road had certainly suffered a bit from the winter frosts with a few big potholes. However we passed through with no problems.
The route passed through Balloch and Loch Lomond and over the hills towards Garelochhead before passing Faslane naval base and Gare Loch and onwards to our lunch stop in Helensburgh.
Meeting us there for lunch and the Erskine tour was Marcia whose husband Raymond had to work. The hotel was well organised and lunch was promptly provided. Apologies Marcia for not pre booking your lunch! The quality was very good and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves based on the general noise and conversation amongst the tables.

After lunch we moved to the bar area as we had a bit of time to spare before our scheduled arrival time at Erskine. A few took advantage of this to scoff another glass of wine but then there was a suggestion from a member of the female persuasion that we could leave early to allow a coffee at Erskine Garden Centre (and possible shopping seeing as we did not stop at Loch Lomond Shores for retail therapy). So after a quick gulp of half full glasses of wine by the aforementioned wine lovers, off we set. Unfortunately any spare time we had disappeared when we were held up in a queue in Dumbarton and eventually arrived at Erskine a few minutes late.

We were met by fundraising coordinators Susan Bradbury and Douglas McEwan. After presentation of the cheque and some photos we split into two groups and were given a tour of the centre. Susan led our group and she certainly was enthusiastic and caring towards the residents and gave an excellent impression of the care provided to the veterans and their families. It was a marvellous place for ex servicemen to spend their later years.
Following the tour some people went to the Garden Centre for coffee and others made their way home.
It was a lovely day out and as usual, the day was made by the good company. Thanks everyone for coming and making it so.
