Tech Day and BBQ

Sunday 20th July 2014

On a superb sunny July Sunday morning, an enthusiastic group of twenty six MX-5 owners, wives and partners (and fifteen cars) met up at ‘Ness Motors’ (Ian’s new garage and workshop and what superb job he has made of it) for a day of technical repairs, installations and inspections, generously supported by the RAC in the form of a patrol vehicle and more importantly it’s driver and RAC technician, more commonly known as club member Marshall Pirrie the driver of the MX-5 Sport Black ‘Mean Green Machine’.

A range of jobs were carried out from easy ones like fitting ‘Smart Top’ modules to two cars, really complex jobs (by Alan’s standards and abilities anyway) of new K&N air filter and spark plugs and underbody inspections for corrosion and scrapes where cars had bottomed out on previous high speed runs.
However foxy Susan had the most to be done in her Mk 2.5 Nevada. Marshall very quickly whipped off her two front drop links and had new ones fitted in a flash. Next job was replacement of a leaking rocker cover gasket. During removal, Marshall noticed that the cam shaft rotation sensor was cracked. However it was thought that a bit of superglue would provide a temporary repair. Once the rocker cover was off and the new gasket was ready for fitting - there came the  dreaded realisation that the wrong gasket had been supplied by MX-5 Parts. As the car was Susie’s daily runner for work we needed to get it up and running. Out came gasket cement and the old gasket was replaced and the engine reassembled.

Time for engine test - you guessed, engine would not start. Plugging in the diagnostic kit proved the cracked sensor was faulty. Where do you get a new camshaft sensor in rural Scotland on a Sunday? Susie’s face was looking more and more miserable and Marshall was feeling the pressure of all the ‘experts’ gazing at him as he tried to get the car going.

Someone had a bright idea (who was it?) - Robert who had his Smart Top fitted earlier and had left to pick up his wife, had an old engine at home in Stirling. So a quick phone call and a trip to Stirling and a replacement sensor was obtained, fitted and Susie’s face lit up - no bus to work on Monday.

By this time the barbecue had been fired up and burgers, sausages, chicken, ribs, kebabs and more very soon were rolling off the grill. With plenty of food and drinks to go round everyone sat round in the sun for a veritable feast and chats.
Deborah also brought along a superb batch of chocolate, lemon and coconut cup cakes for Ian’s birthday and everyone was soon munching into these spongy delights with plenty left for folk to take away to have with an evening cuppa.

A great day was had by all and thanks must be handed out to Ian and Jacqueline for making his workshop, house, BBQ and garden available, to everyone who turned up for a great day of good food, sun and socialising, but especially to Marshall and his employer, RAC for providing technical support. We could not have done it without you. Marshall even got a new member signed up - and it wasn’t Susie!
