The Easter Weekend

Saturday 19th to Monday 21st April

I opened the curtains and the sun was shining, hoping that this was a good omen for the weekend to come. We drove up to Perth where we had planned to begin our journey. We decided to arrive early so that we could have breakfast in Tesco’s café; well nearly everyone had the same idea. The café manager was fantastic and made us really welcome and wished us all a good weekend when we left. After our ‘group hug’ 12 cars left Perth and headed north.

We had our usual comfort break and today it was at the Glenshee Ski resort. [A massive difference from last Easter when we could not stop due to the volume of skiers and snow] The temperature had certainly dropped since leaving Perth. On route we met up with Irene and Ian at Blairgowrie [now there were 13 cars] off we went through Braemar and Tomintoul heading for the Garth Hotel Granton on Spey. WoW! What a lunch – soup and meat platter, we all needed a sleep after that but off we set towards Inverness to fill up with fuel and we would regroup at the Dolphin & Seal Centre.

Temperature had risen again and next stop was Ullapool. We met Jacqueline & Ian, Moira & Gordon in the car park which now made our party 15 cars and 30 people. We were also greeted at the entrance by Neil the manager with all the room keys, comments were made regarding a bunch of keys and a car club,[ I will say no more] Once we were settled and had a stroll along the waterfront we all regrouped in the bar.

After a lovely dinner, the evening entertainment committee took over [Walter]. First off was the decorated egg competition, Gordon & Janet were the judges. I must say that the standard of workmanship was outstanding this year especially the men section. Judges came into the bar and announces that Raymond and Irene were the winners with the Ladybird and Bird. Judges kept to a nature theme.  We all went into the dining room to hold the quiz. Quizmaster was Walter and keeping the scores was Janet. What a laugh we had and we raised £31 towards our chosen charity.

Some members went off to bed exhausted with all the laughing and the hardy bunch departed to the bar and reminisced of the day and looking forward to the MX5 style roads and the entertainment for the rest of the weekend. Well done to everyone who made the day so enjoyable.

Saturday Report by: Maria

After stoking up on full Scottish breakfasts, kippers etc. we were ready for the Sunday run, and if you thought the weather on Saturday was good then you needed to be in Ullapool on Sunday to experience an even better, brilliant sunny morning.

We headed off from the hotel heading for Coigach and Assynt. We had a stop at Achiltibuie for a photo opportunity and a ‘little boy’s game of Sink the Bismark'. Unfortunately most stone throwers had weak arms and only managed to push the Bismark further out to sea. Marshall (the jolly green giant) was the only one with big enough biceps to actually land a bomb on target.

We then headed on towards Lochinver with fabulous mountain and sea views in every direction. We saw Stac Pollaidh and other majestic peaks in all their glory but I would have to ask Chic to name them all for me. On reaching Lochinver, we had a relaxed and tasty lunch at the LochInver Larder, famous for its homemade pies.

We then headed off again on the A837 and B869 towards Clashnessie for the Easter Egg rolling competition. After parking at the same spot as in Easter 2011, Wattie extracted his secret easter egg rolling launcher to eliminate the cheating that went on at the 2011 event. Once set up at the top of the hill everyone queued up to launch their eggs. It seemed a pity to destroy such amazing decorated eggs but it had to be done. I am not saying that someone had a bit of pre run launch practice but guess who won the competition - Wattie the eggy master supreme - and well deserved too. The seagulls enjoyed the egg remains  - shells and all - blooming cannibals.

Back in the cars and an amazing run over twisty, narrow single track roads to Kylescu viewpoint where another 1000 photos were taken of cars, bridge and drivers and crews.
Just as we were about to leave, luck played its part and 5 cars from Highland & Moray turned up on their ‘Roon the Tap‘ trip. They were heading to Ullapool for chips so we invited to the hotel for a chat and a drink.
After another few libations everyone drifted off to get ready for dinner (and a quick nap in a few cases). The hotel staff provided excellent service at dinner and following a very nice meal, we moved through to the bar where the centre table began to groan with raffle prizes.
Ali and Maria sold the raffle tickets and even persuaded a group of fellow hotel residents to buy some after Chic described the good causes. A total of £242 was raised from quiz entries, raffle and sale of  a customised MX5 doll which Evan and Carol won. A tremendous total and thanks to everyone. Chic and Heather even got a large bag full of pants and other ladies garments to send to the Pants for All charity.
The toll of two days of hard driving, alcohol, food and good company started to show and everyone started drifting off to la la land.

Sunday Report by: Drew

Another dry, bright morning but a bit windy and the fleeces started to come out. We had a photo shot in front of the hotel for our charity and also for the Royal Hotel to put on their advertising and then we were off, heading towards Muir of Ord, Loch Ness, and Fort William. Funny how the sun disappeared when Marcia and Raymond left us to head for a few days in Skye. However we had a spirited drive over the hills through the mist on the A833 between Beauly and Drumnadrochit. A coffee stop followed at Fort Augustus and then on to Fort William and lunch at Onich. The sun was again blazing and we had a second blast on the B863 from North Ballachulish and Kinlochleven, back to the A82. A great road just meant for an MX5. A final stop at the Green Welly at Tyndrum for  a drink and then everyone made their own ways home.

A truly great weekend with super runs and good company. Many thanks to everyone who arranged things or just turned up to enjoy the event. It was you who made it so good. See you next year!!!
