The Argyll Run

Sunday 4th August 2013

I made a faux pas last year of saying that we should all be encouraged to go to the planning meeting in order to plan the events for 2013. Then I realised that I had double booked myself for the Autumn International match at Murrayfield. I told Jim and Maria that I would organise a couple of runs through the year as a consequence. This was my second run.

We met up in Callander under clearing skies after an earlier downpour. We also welcomed new members, Jack and Christine and also Gary, all the way from Australia, who was accompanying Alan.

Off we went at a leisurely pace heading north with tops down and barely made it to the Green Welly at Tyndrum before the rain hammered down and the tops went up.

Anyway, after a brief stop and a welcome re-group we headed up towards Bridge of Orchy and just shy of it we headed down Glen Orchy on a slow single track road towards the A85 before taking the Glen Aray road to Inveraray for lunch.

After a relaxed stop in Inveraray we headed, tops down of course,  towards Arrochar via Glen Kinglas, The Rest and be Thankful and Glen Croe before going up the side of Loch Long. Just past the north gate of HMNB Clyde we took a left to go up the delightful twisties in to Glen Fruin. Halfway up we met an irate driver who didn’t like the idea of reversing a few yards to let a Belgian Opal Corsa and 12 MX5s past. The air was blue, believe me. She should be ashamed.

Anyway up the top we passed Strone camp and the nearby site of the Battle of Glen Fruin.

History lesson here. The McGregor’s and their supporters came and basically slaughtered the Colquhoun’s (from Luss) in one of these tribal stramashes that were pretty common around the time. The dead included some University Students who, unwittingly were there on the sidelines and decided  to observe to proceedings but were put to the sword anyway.  Rob Roy McGregor disappeared for a while under the pseudonym of Campbell to avoid any repercussions after this battle.  Herein endeth the lesson.
Try Googling it.

Another leisurely run down the Glen took us to Arden and then along to Lomond Shores where we found the Blue CarPark full and had to use the overspill one to end the run. We then said our goodbyes and headed of in all directions.

Engine alarm and engine cutting out problem.
Mazda assist came out in 45mins, by which time the alarm had cancelled.
Drove the car home to Largs without any problems.
