Ma5da Racing and The Gathering

Sunday 22nd July 2012

Knockhill Racing Circuit,
by Dunfermline,
KY12 9TF

Following the success of the "Mazda Racing Championships" at Knockhill in 2011 the cars and drivers are returning to do battle. With around 100 racing Mazda MX-5s taking to the track with full grids of Mk1 & Mk3 MX-5s it should be another great days racing.

But that's not all, we will also be holding "The Gathering" at the same time. Knockhill have kindly offered us a track side location truly fitting this prestigious annual event.

So why not bring along your MX-5 and join us in the celebration.

Central area are coordinating the organisation of this event.  Each area is forwarding their list to Central. Please do not post on both sites.

This event post is for Hi-5s Area members only wishing to attend this event, please post your name(s) below. This will allow us to organise numbers and routes down.

The basic plan is to depart from Inverness fairly early on the Sunday morning and head straight down the A9 to get into Knockhill at a reasonable time.

We will collect numbers as we go South, picking up Wendy, Jean & Greg and The ALS in the first layby South of the Aviemore junction.

On the return leg we intend stopping at "The Bistro" in Dunkeld for some supper before heading home.  This has been highly recommended by Jean and Greg.  If you plan stopping for supper please add it to your comment so Jean can let tThe Bistro know we're coming! - Thanks

After several abortive attempts we've finally got details of the racing!!  The bad news is that the first MX5 race starts at 0830 - so we leave at 0530hrs - just kidding!!  There are 6 MX5 races but we will miss the first 3 - 3rd race starts at 1040.  The 4th race starts at 1200 so I would plan to get there before that. There are 17 races throughout the day and we are booked for a parade lap during the interval which is 1215 - 1315. The other races include Mini Coopers and Formula Ford plus others.

I reckon we need to LEAVE Inverness at 0800hrs, therefore meeting 0750hrs.  We will collect cars at Aviemore at 0830hrs.  We will meet in Layby 130, which is just about 600m South of the southern turning into Aviemore.  The layby isn't that long so whoever gets there first ensure there is space for 6 cars!!

We turn off the M90 at J6 Kinross, where Steve is meeting his son.  I reckon this will be the only chance for a "comfort" break.  Should we get split up on the run down we will regroup at the Kinross services before running into Knockhill as a group. We'll distribute mobile numbers for those attending by email.

We won't have time for a coffee stop on the way down if we want to get there in time for the 1200 race. I suggest you take a flask!

Jean and Greg have unfortunately had to call of on Doctors advice - too long a trip for Jean's back - really sorry to hear that especially as you guys have recommended the Bistro!!

See you all on Sunday - Thanks

More details will be posted as they become available.

Aye i had a great day out, apart from the wind, It was nice to get a few laps of the track, although not very fast ones, and to see all the MX5'S on the start grid.

Also enjoyed the racing, wish i was there earlier in the day  for the full program, oh well there is always next year..
