Tayside First New Year Run

Sunday 8th January 2012

7 cars turned up for the first Tayside run of the year only to be greeted with a pretty miserable looking sky and some accompanying drizzle (I believe modern parlance describes this as grizzle...grey and drizzle). However, after the customary pre run banter, all tops were downed for the off (except of course Ian and Dot’s hardtop).

Departing Tesco, Tom, resplendent in his monogrammed polo shirt (orders anyone?) took us for a casual saunter through the back roads of Dundee brought us to the empty roads of Angus and soon we were heading northwest to Friockheim and the lands beyond before turning back towards Forfar. It was then on to skirt the north side of Kirriemuir before heading back south to Glamis and The Strathmore Arms. Though this was intentionally a shortish run (after all, it's January, it's Scotland) it did seem longer than it was as there were a few rumbling tums when we arrived in the car park. Happily though, we were all soon seated in the warmth deliberating over the menu and whether to have one, two or three courses. Only one brave soul was up to the challenge of having three, though to be fair to Eddie, he did give most of his ice cream away. Everyone enjoyed the meal which was of the usual standard, braw and plenty of it. However, a dark cloud soon descended when the puddin’ menu was seen to be devoid of the Snowball Ice Cream Tower. Protestations to The Management rectified this oversight with four enthusiastic punters diving in…well, enthusiastic does sound better than greedy.

So with precautionary “comfort” stops and bills paid, it was off to the car park to admire a glowing sunset, say our cheerios and make our respective ways home.

Overall, a good day out and no better way of formalising the end of the festive period (at least that’s what I’m told, salad and stir-fry for the foreseeable future).

So thanks to those who turned up. From Tayside locals to Eddie and Joan from the Grampian Chapter as well as meeting Ian and Elaine from Perth for the first time (hopefully you weren’t put off and you’ll come back again) and also Grant and Janey on their first run (no, the Christmas Lunch doesn’t count).

Photies to follow.

PS. If my wife asks anyone, I only had the soup. That way I can still have my tea this evening.

Thanks for a good day out a good run and good grub Tom.  I think we had what passes for good weather at this time of year too and a fantastic sunset to drive home to.    It was good to meet some more people at last. We are just sorry we didn't get a chance to chat with everyone.  Maybe next time.        Oh and that snowball ice-cream was the last thing I needed in "the battle of the bulge" !
