Easter in Antrim

6th to 9th April 2012

We have been invited over by the MX-5 Owners Club Northern Ireland. The NI area have a small committee planning our trip at the moment the details of the weekend will be posted later.

The ferry from Troon to Larne can now be booked. If travelling from further South there is an alternate crossing from Cairnryan.

Meeting arrangements for the Ferry from Troon to Larne

For those members travelling on the 10.05 sailing from Troon to Larne there will be two meeting points.

For those wishing to travel down to Troon together we will be leaving The Hillcroft Hotel, East Main Street, Whitburn, EH47 0JU at 7.00am. We will be travelling west to Troon mainly on the A71 through Strathaven and Darvel rather than trying to get through the Glasgow morning rush hour traffic. Although it is easter weekend and some offices are on holiday from past experience many are not and the roads are not much quieter.  Journey time is approximately 1hr 30 minutes so we should be in Troon around 8.30am.

For those making their own way to Troon please be in Troon between 8.30 and 8.45am  on Templehill (B749) as we will leave together at 8.45am for the ferry port and check-in.

Please note that although the ferry is not scheduled to leave until 10.05am and last check in is 9.20am the ferry can leave up to 30 minutes before advertised departure time which is why we should be there early. One of our friends in Ireland has already suffered from this and although he arrived at the ferry port ahead of last check in time the ferry was already starting to depart port and he had to remain in Troon for an extra night.

Arrival at Larne

The NI members have arranged to meet us off the boats in Larne at 12/12.30 on Fri 6th and lead us across to the Dunsilly Hotel in Antrim where we should arrive around 1/1.30.
Our itinerary for the weekend starts at 4.00pm Fri with a trip on the Maid of Antrim to include a BBQ at Ram's island (weather permitting), this will be a 5 hour trip costing 20 per head all in.  Alternative arrangements have been made to have a Chinese meal on the opposite side of Lough Neagh should the weather be too inclement for a BBQ.

There are a limited number of tickets available for this trip for the NI members (as they have set aside numbers to ensure that the Scottish visitors and the organising committee can attend)  therefore if anyone from Scotland does not wish to attend please let me know in advance in order that these tickets can be offered to NI members. Either post here or email me at

On Sat 7th NI have organised a run up the north coast starting at the Dunsilly Hotel Antrim 9.30 for a 10.00 start, soup and sandwich's at Ballycastle golf club 12.30 and return to Antrim around 4pm.

On Sat evening there is a buffet supper with music in Massereene Golf club starting at 7.30 with a late licence until 1am, (taxis have been arranged for the 5 minute journey the cost for this is 15 per head and again there are only 40 tickets available for NI members in order that the organising committee from NI and the Scottish visitors can be guaranteed tickets.

As above should anyone not wish to attend please let me know in advance.

At the moment Sun is free to do as we wish and The NI organisers have asked that if there is something we would particlarly like to do if we let them know they will arrange it or if there is a run we would like to do they will have some members lead us - alternatively it is a free day to do your own thing if you would prefer.

The first day of the Easter weekend has been survived-just about - eventually got to bed about1am after a good evening at the Chinese in Ballyclare and lots of banter with our Irish hosts. It must be the first time we have ever arrived at a hotel to be greeted by a sign reminding everyone that there was no drink allowed as it was Good Friday .... Thankfully there was a special dispensation for residents. Great to meet Irish friends again but it could be a long weekend if last night is a sample

Another belter of an Easter Weekend. The hotel on the outskirts of Antrim was excellent. Our hosts from NI were second to none. Great company and a good laugh was had by all. Thanks to Chic and Heather for liaiaing with the NI organisers. It was great to go driving around the countryside where I was last there over 40 years ago.
The 3 days in the RoI, well that's another story.

What a belter of a weekend. Our NI friends did us proud. Thanks to Chic and Heather for all their work, as  said before, these events do not happen on their own. Thanks to all the CS members for their super company, pleasure to be with them for three days. Added in some photos of our trip South, as Gavin said, thats another story.

Thoroughly enjoyable holiday. Thanks to Chic & Heather for all their hard work in putting it together and to those over in Ireland for their hospitality to us.
We both had a great time on this "trip across the watter". Thanks to Janet for quickly throwing together a NI Janet Jaunt on Sunday also.
