The Easter Weekend

23rd to 25th April

Saturday

On a rather damp and grey morning 31 club members gathered at Callander, all eagerly looking forward to the weekend’s adventure. Following the exceptionally good weather of the previous two weekends, we had all hoped for more of the same hot sunshine. Undaunted and with tops down we headed north through damp, misty and atmospheric Glencoe to our first stop in Fort William. Following lunch the sun came out, making our drive via Invergarry, Strathcarron and Achnasheen to Ullapool on brilliant roads extremely enjoyable.

To our surprise a large welcoming committee was waiting for us at the entrance to The Royal Hotel, or was it just because the fire alarm was sounding and it was the Fire Brigade they were waiting for. Anyway to escape any potential danger, a place of safety was deemed to be the correct course of action, the Ferry Boat Inn was the favoured choice. Were we in for a surprise, the cosy bar that we've frequented on previous visits has now been turned into a mainly dining venue by the new owners. Gone are the comfy chairs, warming open fire and pub atmosphere. Undaunted and in true MX-5 tradition, we re-arranged the tables and chairs to suit our needs and enjoyed some well-earned refreshments before being encouraged to leave to make way for the evenings diners.

The Royal Hotel

The evening’s entertainment started with an excellent dinner in the Royal’s function room, this was followed by a raffle which raised £125 for this year’s charity, the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust. Many thanks to all who donated prizes and purchased tickets, your generosity is very much appreciated.

One of the main topics of banter during the evening was the Easter egg competitions due to be held the next day. For something that was supposed to be a bit of light hearted fun, certain members were very concerned about potential cheating. Have members decorate their own eggs, is it a real egg, have the shells been tampered with in any way, all questions that would not be fully answered until the actual event. Following dinner we all moved to the hotel bar and enjoyed a very social MX-5 club evening together.

Sunday

The days run started once again with damp misty conditions, not the best for our drive into Coigach and Assynt. Only the bottom of Stac Pollaidh could be seen and the Summer Isles were out there somewhere in the mist. Heading north towards Lochinver we saw the sky clearing and when the sun came out our spirits rose.

We stopped at Lochinver were we enjoyed some free time to explore at our leisure. The big attraction for nearly everyone wasn't the magnificent views or the historic landmarks, much more basic than that, “PIES”. Not just any old pie, award winning pies from the Lochinver Larder, wow what a mouth-watering selection and all freshly made on the premises. Who ate all the pies, your right we did.

The B869 Near Clashnessie

We continued our drive along the spectacular B869 passing through Stoer and Clashnessie until we discovered the perfect spot to hold the great egg competition. With a stunning beach in the background the tension mounted as egg after egg started to appear out of boots and glove boxes. A great deal of work had obviously gone into each eggs decoration, it was therefore appropriate that the club spared no expense in providing the refuse bin for the display area. The standard of decoration was incredibly high making it very difficult for the three judges to find an outright winner; finally Jacqueline was declared the winner for her pink and purple production.

The Best Decorated Egg

We then climbed to the top of the hill for the egg rolling competition, with twists and turns, long and short grass and rocks this was not going to be easy. Egg after egg came rolling down the hill accompanied by shrills of laughter and cheering. Some went a long way, some burst open; Jacqueline’s prize winner only managed a pathetic few yards, all show and no go. In the end Jane’s athletic egg was the worthy winner of the long distance prize.

The Furthest Travelled Egg

We then drove onwards enjoying stunning views around bend after bend; this surely is one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. Unfortunately our stop at Kylesku had to be abandoned due to the A894 being closed due to an accident, we then about turned and headed back to Ullapool.

Monday

After two fantastic days it was time to head home and lucky for us the weather was just top down perfect. We cruised past Inverness and Cawdor Castle to our lunch stop at The Garth Hotel in Granton on Spey. We all tucked into platters of tasty fresh sandwiches and hot soup which was ready for us all to consume on arrival, you would think we hadn't eaten for days. Following lunch we headed to the end of the run at Perth via Tomintoul, Braemar and Glen Shee.

It was three days of sheer driving bliss on some of the best MX-5 roads in Scotland made perfect by the enthusiasm and friendliness of everyone who attended, many thank to everyone for making it such a resounding success.

Fantastic run today, despite the rain. Tomorrow may be even better if the party animals along the corridor sober up in time.

I was so eggcited about the weekend and the egg competition. I didn't want to shell out too much money on decorating my egg. My brain was scrambled thinking about the decoration. I was so eggstatic when Sunday arrived. I didn't win a prize but I had an eggcellent weekend.( Maria has promised not to mention eggs till next Easter). We had a wonderful weekend. Thanks to Ian and Jacqueline for their hard work in making it happen.
