The Lindisfarne Weekend Run

Saturday 3rd to Sunday 4th July 2010

Lindisfarne

Following the 2009 Lindisfarne event both Tyne Tees and Central Scotland area coordinators thought it would be a good idea to extend this popular event over two days to allow more social interaction between the areas. The possibility of inviting a few other areas along was also muted. Fast forward to July 2010 and the idea became a reality. With 35 cars from six areas, Tyne Tees, North Yorkshire, Peaks and Pennines, North Scotland South, North Scotland East and finally Central Scotland the weekend was a great success.

The famous five assemble at Eskbank.

A hot sunny Saturday morning saw 5 cars assemble at Eskbank ready for the journey south. As the roads used recently on the Reivers Run were so good we just had to use some of them again. With the sun shining and very little traffic to hinder our pace we wound our way down the back roads to Hawick where we were joined by Fiona and Ian, then onwards to our lunch stop at the Horse and Hound Country Inn Bonchester Bridge.

Once fed and watered we returned to the cars for our afternoon treat. Up and down hills with sweeping bends, long straights, all on empty roads we headed towards Kielder, this if what MX-5s were made for - definitely zoom zoom.

Passing by Kielder Water there was a call for a photo stop, a quick left turn into Leaplish Waterside Park found an empty slipway just begging to be adorned with our sexy cars. Before any kind of officialdom appeared Malc ordered everyone into a straight line. The onlookers were very amused to see us all jump out and snap away with the cameras, especially when one attractive young lady lay on her bonnet in a very artistic pose.

Kielder Water

Onwards to Seaton Burn, to find our hotel for the night, at the same time a long line of 5ís also drove in from all the other areas.

An evening spent attending the hotel gym, swimming, sauna etc followed by a healthy light meal and long walk before an early night in bed, well that was the intention. Yeah right! It had been a long hot drive and a few cold beers seemed like a much better idea. A social MX-5 evening was then enjoyed by all.

We awoke on the Sunday morning to totally different weather, heavy clouds, strong winds and the impending threat of rain. Nevertheless the tops were down as we headed north to Lindisfarne. A quick dive off the A1 at Alnwick found us in the supermarket, stocking up with burgers and rolls for the BBQ. As we approached Lindisfarne we stopped to fit the flags to the cars to allow us to make a dramatic Scottish entrance to the event car park.

The remainder of the clan arrives

The weather was looking pretty bleak with strong winds and rain threatening. As the final three cars arrived from Scotland, (after driving through torrential rain) it looked like we may have to find refuge in one of the islands hostelries. On Gordonís brilliant suggestion we decided to move all the cars to a more sheltered area of the car park. Here, we erected the event shelters, lit the BBQís and started cooking. Within a short time we were all happy and warm, eating and drinking, better still, the sun came out. We then enjoyed our own hot sunny micro climate for the remainder of the afternoon.

A brilliant afternoon was had by all.

Following the BBQ, our annual rounders match got underway, this time with two teams mixed from all the areas. The game was played with enthusiasm and skill and by all involved. There was even a few vuvuzelas being blown by the appreciative supporters.

The winners cup (well a Tyne Tees MX-5 mug actually) was presented to Charles Kennedy on behalf of his team by Tyne Tees AC Jenny Dorgan.

The raffle was held in aid of Maggies Cancer Care which raised £100.00 and brings the total from 6 events this year to £417.00. As ever thanks again to all who contributed both in providing prizes and buying tickets.

The whole weekend was a great success, now looking forward to 2011 where Iím sure it will be even bigger and better.
