The 2010 New Year Run

Sunday 3rd January 2010

02/01/10 18:50 RUN CANCELLED

Due to the severe weather conditions the New Year Run has unfortunately had to be cancelled on safety grounds.

We had two cars out checking the route today. It was fairly good weather conditions at the start, but this quickly deteriorated. We gave up at Kinneswood when it turned into white out conditions.

Heading home over the Forth Bridge and onto the slip road it turned into a nightmare with polished thick ice covering the road. Dozens of cars were sliding all over the carriageway struggling to get grip. The road to Newton also turned out to be totally blocked. The journey home took us 3 hours and 55 miles after having to go back over the Forth Bridge through Fife and over the Kincardine Bridge to Linlithgow.

We were the lucky ones, as I write this Chic is still stuck near Newbridge due to the M9 being closed in both directions because of the ice.

With temperatures due to be down to -12 again tonight it is very unlikly that the situation will be any different for the run.

Road condition passable on the way out.

Then started to deteriorate.

Then got really bad.

As the weather on Sunday morning had improved dramatically we decided to have an impromptu lunch meet on Sunday, in place of the New Year Run. So we met at the original lunch venue with Gavin's sole MX5 looking rather lonely as others arrived in a variety of four wheel or front wheel drive cars.

The run up to Tillicoultry was filled with a variety of picture post card scenes with blue skies framing the snow clad Ochil Hills. Those with local knowledge stayed on the main roads however others following Sat Nav directions, (yours truly), had a rather more interesting journey through some snow covered country lanes - scenic no doubt but we decided against returning on the same roads.

Lunch, as had been indicated in Ian's original run details, was excellent as was the venue. A short time was spent relaxing in the large couches beside an open fire choosing our lunch and offering New Year Greetings to each couple as they arrived.

Soon we were directed through to the dining room where a table had been quickly prepared to accommodate the 10 of us and we enjoyed an excellent lunch accompanied by much humorous banter of everyone's experiences over the festive period.

After lunch we headed back on our respective routes home before darkness fell with the associated drop in temperatures and deterioration in road conditions. As we headed down the motorway a silver MX5 headed past us roof down...it could only have been Gavin in normal roof down mode irrespective of temperatures.

After the events of Saturday, Sunday's lunch turned into an enjoyable escape from the confines of home even if totally surprising that we were able to get out.

An interesting start to the 2010 season.
Many thanks to all who kept in touch and sorry for anyone disappointed that the main run was cancelled.

Good venue, good foof, good company. Not sure my 5 would have got over the ice!

Well worth a return to this venue in the future - glad we ventured out to try it.
Had enough difficulty walking on the ice let alone taking a 5 over it and Heather's mum refused to sit in the boot so the Megane it had to be
