The Stevie Smith Memorial Run

Sunday 12th July 2009

Eight cars lined up in Tesco's Car park while the owners limbered up for the upcoming sporting event. The sun was shining and we all felt optimistic about the day ahead.
We set off along the "Dalkeith bypass" before finding some cracking twisties on the way to Lindisfarne. Iain Fleming and Lorna and Ron joined us at Greenlaw.
Just before arriving at Lindisfarne we stopped to adorn our cars with Scottish flags. There was a minor mishap when one flag made a bid for freedom but was soon captured by tail end Charlie!
Then it was on to the car park, accompanied by Chic's Bagpipe music to meet the opposition! Our numbers were increased again by Wilson and Susan who had already arrived as they had travelled down the night before. This brought the Central Scotland car count up to eleven.

The Tyne Tees members were already starting their BBQs, so we parked our cars and said our hellos before setting about lighting our BBQs. While we waited on the usual feast of burgers and sausages, Iain Fleming produced a prototype "Event Shelter" for the two clubs to test drive. It turned out to require more than a few bodies to erect it but once up it proved very spacious, in fact big enough for 2 cars!

The sun was shinning so as well as sharing sausages, napkins and coleslaw, we passed around the suntan lotion. Although some discovered afterwards that it doesn't work unless you put it on ALL exposed bits!

After lunch was the raffle (thanks to all who donated prizes). Most members came away with a prize (some were lucky enough to be picked out 4 times, so no more moaning that you never win anything! The raffle in aid of the Help for Heroes Carity was successful in raising a further £101.00 which now gives us a running total of £237.00 to date.

Then it was time for the main event, Tyne Tees had more team members than Central Scotland so some emigrated North and became honorary Scots to make the teams even. Disappointingly Colin took off his kilt and put on joggers before the match began. We had hoped the kilt might have been our secret weapon this year! Sadly with no secret weapons (Rachel, Pip or a true Scotsman), despite a valiant attempt from the team, we were unable to retain our title this year.................but there's always next year! It was suggested that next year we make it a weekend event (more socialising!).

A tired, disappointed but suntanned convoy set off home, having to stop to put the roofs up after a few miles. The rain was heavy but short lived so it was soon tops down again.

It was suggested that we stop on route for a post match nosh (no burgers, was the only request) so we stopped at the Stair Arms just north of Pathead. After the earlier exercise we all had a hearty feast (Iím sure that fish was a whale) and agreed it may be a possible venue for a Sunday Pub Meet. Finally we all set off on the last leg of our journey home.
Roll on next year

note to selves - take sun cream. Looking a little slapped. Taking the waterproofs and ella bellas must have made helped the weather.
Rather than rounders i reckon we would have been better off having a group nap. Or play a game we had a chance of winning.
A grand day out.

Yet another great day, even the weather was kind to us. Congratulations must go to the Tyne Tees rounders team following a convincing win.  The event canopy erection demo was also fun.

Another great day in the company of some of our dearest freinds. As always, great fun was had by all and it's always a pleasure to beat you at rounders. I think it was the new rounders bat that clinched it, and eight year old Ethan was a little star.
Looking forward to the next one, we'll see about making a weekend of it.

A most enjoyable day out with good company from North and South of the border.Well done to Tyne Tees on their resounding win. Which brings me to a small matter of winners and losers.
It is all very well turning up in cars with flags and pipe music blaring but the threat ended there. Tyne tees must have thought they were in for a serious gubbing at rounders but allas this was not meant to be. I was sorely dissapointed in both the numbers taking part and the quality of  those who did. Where has the pride and determination to win gone. Sarah did a fine job with a magnificent catch and spirited fielding but sadly that was the only high we at CSS had.
Perhaps we need to have a training session or try another sport like dominoes.
Thanks again to the oganisers and just to let you know my boken nail is on the mend.

Glad to hear the finger nail is healing up and was pleased to see that you did not use it as too much of an excuse for your fielding - however the running between bases was a joy to behold ...maybe a running competition next year
