Gordon's Birthday Run
Sun 15th Mar 2009
organised by Central Scotland

Car Count : 17
[ show pre-run info ]

Sunday 15th March 2009

A sharp blast along the M8 from Newhouse brought the Western contingent to The Hunter’s Tryst where the car park was already populated by an array of fives. After some admiring of the sleek machines the assembled company sang a chorus of happy birthday and 17 cars were led off by Gordon on his Birthday run.

Once we had cleared the city boundary the convoy joined up and headed along the southern edge of the Pentland Hills through Carlops before turning off at West Linton onto the “B” roads and then continuing south alongside the Tweed past Neidpath Castle and on into Peebles.

After a short stop in the car park and a further opportunity to meet some of the newer members, we resumed and headed off for our lunch stop. Gordon successfully negotiated us past Stobo Castle and it’s Spa facilities without stopping despite the appeals from our female companions.

At Tweedsmuir we headed onto the single track roads that carried us through the rolling hills of the scenic border countryside, on past Talla Dam and up the steep single track road which then dropped down past Megget Reservoir and on to St Mary’s Loch where we stopped for lunch at Tibbie Shiel’s Inn.

After a pleasant lunch, Gordon was presented with a birthday cake from the members which was iced with a picture of Gordon and Jacqueline with their cars, (surreptitiously taken at the last tech day). This coincidentally was Jacqueline’s birthday too.

A raffle was then held and the £55.00 collected will be added to the "Help for Heroes Charity" fund which now stands at £73.00. Thanks again to all who contributed prizes and purchased tickets to help us raise funds for this worthwhile charity.

After everyone was suitably refreshed we took to the roads once more and had the benefit of a clear road alongside the loch and over the scenic B709 into the village of Traquair, through Cardrona Forest and into Peebles.

Conversations in the car park indicated that all had enjoyed the roads, lunch and the benefit of a hazy sun allowing for roof down motoring throughout the day.

Thanks were offered to Gordon and Sue for their efforts before they headed off to continue to celebrate his birthday and we all headed off in various directions for our respective homes.

An enjoyable run to start the spring and many thanks to Gordon and Sue for their organisation.

Nigel says 'Brilliant run Boys, next time I'll remember to release the handbrake!!"  Now I wonder what that could mean?  Er....  And Richard, who needs a supercharger when you've got exhaust power?!

Thanks for all the "thanks" and the birthday wishes & cake.  Well done you sneaky lot.

Enjoyed the run again, for the 3rd time in so many weeks.  However a pity about the Sunday Driver in the Volvo over the Megget reservoir road.  Magic wee blast on the home run to Peebles compensated to some extent.
Might be persueded to organise another in due course.
