Summer Run
Sun 24th Aug 2008
organised by Tayside Scotland

Car Count : 9

[ show pre-run info ]

Having worked hard to ruin most of the week, the rain gods gave up on Sunday and we woke up to a bright and relatively sunny morning. Feeling very much the poor cousin as one Mark 3 after another turned up, Colin led the main convoy of 7 cars at a sprightly pace to Arbroath via inland roads, where we met up with John, Alan and Val.

John led us North to Brechin, then pulled off into the country roads heading for Edzell, along which we gingerly avoided the puddles and mud thinking about the time we'd all spent cosseting our paintwork. As we pulled into Edzell they'd clearly put out the bunting for us, and our arrival was spoilt only by the stunning classic and new jags (including an E-type and XK8) which stole our thunder outside the Panmure Arms. The Arms did us proud with great surroundings where we moreorless had the room to ourselves, and a fine Sunday lunch.

The afternoon stretch took us North to the start of the Cairn O'Mount where we wheeled right along some of the most picturesque roads on the route which took us to Auchenblae, a small gem of a village, after which we headed South along the coastal road. Say what you like about the A92, it provides some superb views and stretches of road. After taking a detour and a brief stop at the Caledonian Railway at Bridge of Dun (where some of the boys disappeared to enjoy the metal), we headed back down the A92 before retracing our steps back to Dundee.

Thanks to John who organised his first event, doing the bulk of the route and choosing the superb lunch venue, as well as a sheet outlining points of interest, thus raising the bar for all future organisers! This of course means he will be asked to organise another one next year.

As well as our loyal regulars, we were particularly pleased to welcome Alan, Val, Alistair, Trudy and Carin on their first Club run, and Willie and Gill who came across the water from Fife to join us for the first time. Haste ye back!

Great day out lots of fun & excellent lunch.
I too got quite excited when I saw the Jaguars in the car park. It was the immaculately restored XK120 which caught my eye.
