Culzean Autoclassica 2007

The announcement of this new show, which will replace The Callander Classic Weekend next year, took place on 22nd and 23rd September, unfortunately clashing with the MX-5 Scotland Gathering at Glenshee, but the club was still represented on both days.

On Saturday, 8 cars attended the display at Culzean Castle on the Ayrshire coast, and the show announcement at Turnberry Airfield, a disused runway and former racetrack, which the organisers hope can be reinstated sufficiently to allow some demonstration runs in later years. Apparently, a Formula 1 team once entered a race at Turnberry circuit, and the track also saw the stupendous V16 BRM run, with the sound being heard up to 10 miles away!

The afternoon saw a run around Ayrshire, and the MX-5 Owners Club provided transport for the marketing team, with the cameraman, Simon Laidlaw of cutmustard.tv, accepting a place in my car. We had a great time overtaking and being overtaken, only for the sake of filming of course, and shooting our route along a fast, clear, twisting single-track road was particularly enjoyable. Some of those on the run did take a considerably extended route thanks to a mistake in the run directions, but overall it was a very successful launch day.

Sunday was a trial run of the show, but unfortunately the event field was very wet, so the displays were held in the main car park area. This didnít seem to affect the show unduly, although displays were a bit rigid, with most clubs following the lines of parking spaces.

One advantage of Culzean is the many options for display areas within the grounds, and separate specialist displays were shown in the stableyard, Visitors Centre courtyard and car park, and in front of the castle. The organisers plan to develop the show along the lines of The Festival of Speed, with period dress and the castle setting taking exhibitors and visitors back in time, and this effect could easily be imagined from this test show. For 2008 they have scheduled concours, vintage, classic and prestige auctions, fashion shows, driving competitions, car parades and a soapbox derby. In the evening there will be barbecues, live music and even a black tie Grand Gala Dinner.

The Callander Classic will be missed by us all, but this new show has great promise, and the MX-5 Owners Club Scotland will be supporting it fully next year. Hopefully some of our friends from south of the border will be joining us again, and for everyone planning to attend next year, remember to dress up Ė details of our theme are being finalised, so watch the web-site for more information!

Callander is dead, long live Culzean!!

Great event!  Saturday announcement went really well, enjoyed the aerodrome (sneaked a blast along it!) and taking the camaraman on the run was fun, although we did get lost !! Found out it was an error in the directions!!
Sunday was excellent, although it rained a bit - very promising start though.  Soap box derby was a laugh - I think this should be a Tech Day project for next year - our version of Project Merlot!!  I'm doing the article for magazine, so e-mail me any good photos, particularly of the hats and the track.
Ta ALEX
