Mx5 Scotland - The Gathering
Sun 23rd Sep 2007
organised by Central Scotland
Car Count : 60
My idea of a Gathering Event was met with a luke warm reception when I first suggested it about ten months ago, perhaps there was perceived to be a greater divide between North and South members, or just that the New North Co-ords were still finding their feet and found it inconceivable to plan so far ahead, anyway I had planted the seed and backed off waiting to see if anything would grow.
Several factors brought on the change of attitude, the North Areas had seen a plethora of new members, all hungry for the next chance to get out in their cars on Club Runs, so the new North Sub Areas were going from strength to strength as each successful Run or Event was met with a very enthusiastic members response of more of the same please, time to nurture that seed again and thankfully this time the shoots began to show, yes ok we are in, we’ll do it, this was just the answer I was waiting for.
Sadly the unexpected death of Stevie Smith, one of our active and helpful Central Scotland members held up the planning of the event slightly, but such was the high esteem held and the fondness felt by all the Scottish Area members towards Stevie, that now more than ever the need to unite our Scottish Areas was of paramount importance.
The big day finally came and such was the interest for this event that well over sixty cars were expected from all the Scottish Areas. Central Scotland had Thirty Five cars gather at Perth Services for the run up to Glenshee, a route avoiding the A9 had been well planned by Run organisers Dot & Chas and before long the two convoys were on their way, minus a few cars whose occupants had volunteered to take the direct route and help out with the Parking of cars at the Hotel.
The Spittal of Glenshee Hotel was an ideal location for this event and one that Central had used many times before, we had at our disposal both of the split level dining rooms and the usual excellent carvery was set up, two of the girls from the advance party Janice and Catherine were on the door to greet everyone on arrival and politely suggested that people could sit anywhere or even mix with members from a different Area, unfortunately very few if any choose to do this.
As this event was dedicated to Stevie Smith a small rally plaque was given to the first fifty members who had expressed an interest in taking part in the event.
With so many members kindly donating prizes for the raffle it did feel like the longest raffle ever. Some of the bigger prizes donated by Phoenix Paisley and Arnold Clark Aberdeen were auctioned rather than raffled, which meant that the items went to members that really wanted them for their own use. All the proceeds from the raffle and auction will be used for the benefit of the Scottish Areas and for next years Gathering.
Back in the car park our numbers were swelling and quite a few more than expected, decided at the last minute to come along and not bother about lunch, although difficult to count, going by the lunch numbers and the head count of faces in the car park, we had reached the expected figure of sixty cars, something which is difficult to capture in one photograph as many would testify. Introductions were made and bonnets lifted to discuss the many aftermarket goodies and modifications members had made to their cars and before long it was time to head for home.
So was the Gathering a success and will we do it again, well judging by the favourable comments on the web site, I would say yes and definitely.
Many thanks to Dot & Chas for organising the route and to Chic, Richard & Eileen, Colin & John, Rob & Margaret, Simon, Frank, Gordon, Janice, Catherine and Linda who all helped out on the day.

We'd like to thank everyone involved in today .... whether you be from Central, the North (N), North (NE) or North (S) :-D Can't believe that the weather held out as well as it did! The Spittal of Glenshee hotel did us proud with the food .... we were among the last to get served, but there was still loads and for the money it was a bit of a bargain.
What a great way to remember Stevie!!!!!
