The Loopy Run

Pick up points arranged, meals ordered, but nobody had arranged for the usual Hi5 weather, it was wet. However, the optimists amongst us really believed that the West would provide the usual sunshine. Only four cars for the first pickup at DFS, the focus of the club is drifting North, as we headed out to pick up the next 6 cars on the A835. Full marks and brownie points to Alex who was the only one to be in the correct layby, the A835 does indeed start on the Tore Roundabout. All the others were in the usual layby, but at least we were all together at last. No chance of roofs down as we headed for the first break at Achnasheen, the deer were on the grass by the station which made us feel a wee bit special. I think the Station Master lets them our every morning just for the tourists, yes it was still wet, very wet. Down to Loch Carron on a deteriorating road surface and left for Kyle of Lochalsh giving Andy and Ali the chance of a second gear blast through the tunnel to find out who has the noisier exhaust. Up into the clouds and then, on the decent to Loch Alsh the sun came out! Result. That put an end to Aliís Ďfirst to spot a patch of blue sky competitioní. I donít remember any prizes being handed out though as by the time we reached the bridge it was wet again. Final pickup on the Armadale road where Eric and Rachel joined the fun and took over the lead to provide local knowledge while the hooligans at the back dropped their roofs for a while. The Gasto restaurant was well prepared for our arrival and after a short break all our lunches arrived at the same time! It was meant to be culture hour at Armadale after lunch with a walk around the grounds but did I mention it was wet, so we headed off for the craft shop on the pier and passed the time not buying anything. In the queue for the ferry were the Hardcore Rally cars, big Nissans etc. with exhausts that reduced Andy and Ali to near silence, they ate us up on leaving Mallaig, needless to say we never saw them again. Down to Arisaig on the coast road, which is impressive even in the wet, to arrive at Banavie and Neptunes Staircase on the canal. Yes, it was still wet so coffee and cake overcame any desire to walk round Thomas Telfords engineering masterpiece. It was a reasonable run up to the Loch Ness Inn for dinner, in the wet of course, where again, despite the limited menu we were offered, the food was very good. As you might expect, the rain had stopped when we came out so a few roofs went down for the final dash for home. Not the best weather for what was to be a scenic run but spirits were high and the roads presented some good driving, the food was good as was the company, so really all that was missing was the sun. Next time, maybe.
