The Wedding Run

When our good friends and nearest Area south of the Border, invited us to join them at Gretna Green for the Wedding of two of their members, we of course replied with a resounding yes please. Both Fran and Simon are no strangers to us, being  part of the Tyne Tees team for a few years  many of us have locked horns with them at Lindisfarne during our annual competitive rounders match.

A re-arranged time slot at the Gretna Old Hall Hotel meant an earlier start at Abington, where the eleven cars from East and West met up, everyone was dressed in their best togs including seven kilted male drivers. A roof down but otherwise boring blast down the motorway to Gretna Railway Station, where we joined up with the other fourteen cars, mostly from Tyne Tees but some from further afield including Club members from the  Chilterns Area.
The ivory ribbons and bows we had purchased were attached to the bonnets and sun visors of the cars and while we waited for the signal to head to the Hotel many introductions were made to our fellow members, of course the cameras were out in force capturing all the dressed up people and cars.
A slight technical hitch followed when we had to queue up on the hotel driveway because someone forgot to unlock the chain giving access to the hotel lawns but we were soon all parked up in two neat rows almost inch perfect. The ceremony itself took place in an old barn come museum which was tastefully decorated to include an ancient carriage and blacksmith?s anvil, fortunately we all managed to squeeze in to witness the friendly though short ceremony. After copious amounts of pictures were taken of the happy couple in the courtyard and gardens it was soon time to head off to our lunch venue.
Alan took up the lead here and steered us to the Queens Hotel in Lockerbie using the quiet old A74 road. We seem to be quite lucky with our lunch venues and once again this turned out to be an absolute cracker, well done Alan. Back out in the car park before heading off for the rest of our planned run, a few pictures of men in kilts hiding a Mk-3 were taken, including one with a would be Scotsman from Tyne Tees, who felt qualified enough to join us after rolling up his trouser legs and wrapping a tartan rug round his waist, well it was funny at the time.
We bid farewell to the Teesers and continued our run north through Eskdalemuir to St Mary?s Loch and then across the fabulous unclassified Capercleuch to Tweedsmuir road, although the club have been over this road a few times before, I don?t ever recall driving it south to north which must be the best route to take as the scenery is stunning, after driving alongside the Megget reservoir the drop down and unfolding panorama of the Talla reservoir has to be the finest view in the Borders. The last leg of the journey took us up the A702 to Broughton and across the B7016 to Biggar where the run ended.

A big thanks to Alan Tollin for arranging the lunch venue and route back, also to Gavin for taking the lead part of the way,  to allow Alan?s mother to experience being mid convoy for some of the route, thanks also to all our members for playing their part in the success of the day, to our friends from Tyne Tees for inviting us, but most of all to Fran and Simon congratulations and best wishes.

Douglas.

Thank you all so much for helping to make Simon & Fran's wedding day into such a success. The cars looked wonderful & the Men in Kilts made the day for Fran, she was so pleased you had all made the effort. So did Arracelly, the lady who was straight in there, among you all in the group photo. She didn't stop smiling all the way home!!

Thank you to Alan for choosing the venue for our lunch after the wedding, the food was excellent.

We were very touched that Central Scotland OC gave a gift of vouchers to Simon & Fran, we didn't know you were doing that, it was a lovely surprise & very kind of you. We had a collection and gave them gift vouchers too.
Jenny.

Thanks Jenny, once again it was a pleasure to be in the company of our Friends from Tyne Tees.

e-mail from Fran & Simon..Hi Douglas

We would like to thank you and your members so very much for your company yesterday at our wedding.

It was such a wonderful turnout of cars and people - the kilts were magnificent.  We were so touched to see so many of you there.  Many many thanks for the vouchers, which were certainly not expected, but very welcome!

We will see you at Holy Island in a few weeks - can't promise we'll let you win, but you never know!!

Thanks once again.

Kind regards
Mr & Mrs Simon Williams

Yes, Congrats Fran and Simon. Also VMT to Douglas for the ribbons etc and Alan for choosing such good roads. Also, lunch was excellent. Now. We never did get down to discussing the rules of rounders with our friends from across the border.

Congratulations to Fran and Simon, and thank you for inviting us to your big day. My mother and I both loved the run, beginning with the wedding and culminating in some stunning scenery (thanks to Dougls for organising the event and providing the ribbons, and to Gavin for leading the convoy to St. Mary's Loch). I have used the hotel several times but the food even exceeded my expectations. My mother was so impressed with the route, she will be borrowing my MX5 and re-doing the entire trip. See you on the Kinloch Rannoch trip,  Alan (with Miranda)
