Saturday 24th September

Having watched the last of the good weather disappear on Friday it was with  heavy hearts and heavy black clouds overhead we assembled at DFS on Saturday morning. No rain yet so it was tops off and head for Grantown, the Roofless Streaks were on their way to Perthshire. Even blacker clouds appeared over our convoy when it was realised that the ‘no bacon roll’ threat was true but still, life was good on the route to Braemar, always a road to enjoy. Met up with Isla who had brought a couple of friends along at the coffee shop before heading south for Grantully and lunch. Still not enough rain to have the roof on so luck was certainly on our side, we even came across a Porsche on the Pitlochry road who kindly acted as our pacemaker albeit with a bit of encouragement from us.
No white water activity unfortunately for our lunchtime cabaret except one well laden canoe which dutifully capsized for our entertainment directly opposite our restaurant window, what organisation all this takes! Kenmore next but turning left over the hills for Amulree on an interesting wee road then down the Sma’ Glen to Hosh behind Crieff and the Grouse Experience for coffee. Finally we met the rain so it was roofs up from there to our home for the night at Lochearnhead Hotel where we were made very welcome.

Sunday 25th September

Blue sky greeted us in the morning, well wee bits at least as we headed for our tourist bit at Killin and the Falls of Dochart, yesterdays rain had made them quite impressive, then along the south of Loch Tay where we had a bit of a standoff with a Ferrari displaying white knuckles, wide eyes and fear, however no paint was exchanged. The scenery was much improved today as we headed for Fortingall and coffee followed by a look at the yew tree, nice to see something living that is older than me. Heading north then for Kinloch Rannoch we briefly saw the Tayside trio out on their run heading south, much waving. Turned along the very scenic Schiehallion road but of course the only stopping place was packed with cars so no stops until lunch. From Loch Rannoch to Loch Tummel and all the driving enjoyment that gives to meet the old A9 and head for Bruar, no, not for shops but for a walk to the Falls, surely a first ! Having successfully avoided it until now we had an hour of the A9 to Aviemore where a fine Italian meal finished off what had been a successful drive around parts of Perthshire. Thanks to all who took part, sorry about the lack of bacon rolls, I’m sure you would have found space for them!!

Big thanks to Douglas & Muriel for organising a very enjoyable weekend away. It was great to try new roads over the two days, and nobody went home hungry from this one! Local Super Car owners will also rest more easily knowing Douglas has returned home!!!
