Trip to Skye – July 2016

The weather forecast hadn’t looked too promising, but it was bright and dry when rendezvoused with the other cars in a lay by just north of Maryburgh on the A835. We then headed west taking the ‘High Road’ across to Skye via Achnasheen and Loch Carron. As expected traffic was a bit busier than normal. We had a quick comfort break at Achnasheen where Gillian provided tea & coffee for everybody with some pastries and shortbread. This was much appreciated by all but the midgies at Achnasheen meant we didn’t stay long before heading west again.  After Loch Carron the traffic cleared for a while and we had a good run with everybody enjoying a wee blast through the tunnel. Eventually our fun was curtailed as we got caught behind a bus, although it turned out it wasn’t a bus but a bus sized motor home. It may have been called Concord – but it certainly wasn’t going very quickly.
Just outside Kyle of Lochalash, we made contact with the Skye cars via the CB’s.  Not bad considering they were coming through Broadford at the time. We all met up on the bridge and after the normal greetings we headed across the bridge and then to Kyleakin to catch a good group photo with the bridge in the background. Some cars were attracting female attention – weren’t they Ali?
As we headed north, the sun was shining and it was a glorious day. Rachel was doing an excellent job of pointing out the landmarks on the way to Sligachan Hotel for soup and sandwiches. After a very enjoyable lunch we headed west to Dunvegan. The weather continued to improve and it was a great run. Traffic was also a bit kinder to us, and as we arrived in Uig Sean piped us all in to Martin & Lisa’s campsite car park. Eric & Rachel then treated us all to tea, coffee and cakes in the local cafe – thank you very much.
After refreshments we continued on our drive around the north tip of Skye. The road out of Uig was quite exciting and also allowed us to see Eric’s current collection of vehicles. We hadn’t realised ‘Arnold Clark’ had actually got as far as Skye.  The road around the north was a great trip, but the weather and holiday traffic meant it was quite busy.  None of this however detracted from the views and Rachel was keeping us well informed about all the interesting places that we were passing. We then drove down to Staffin beach for another photo opportunity and the story about the swimming cows.
Heading south now into Portree and it started to rain. This was the first rain we had seen all day, but we kept going and it eased off once we were through Portree.  We arrived back at Sligachan Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Everybody was buzzing about the day and we started talking about our next trip to Skye which it was agreed should be longer to appreciate more of the sites and take in some activities.
After dinner we had a quick tour of the Cuillin Brewery and Eric was kind enough to give us all some samples to take away. Then it was time to bid farewell to our hosts who had done a splendid job looking after us for the day.  It was raining gently as we headed off with roofs down for the run home.  Once we left Skye the rain did increase and we could see from the standing water it had been pretty wet on the mainland. At the top of Glen Shiel we finally conceded and stopped to put the roofs up.  The rest of the run home was reasonably uneventful before we stopped in Drumnadrochit to bid our farewells as we all headed home in different directions.
It was a really great day which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Many thanks to Eric & Rachel and Martin & Lisa for hastily arranging the run, and I am sure it won’t be long before we return to Skye.  The trip there and back just reinforced the commitment our Skye members have to the club when coming onto the mainland for our other trips.
All in all another great run, great company, great roads and not forgetting great cars.
