Hi-5’s Go To Durness & Cocoa Mountain Sunday 19th July 2015

Bobby had promised us good weather for our trip to Durness, and that wasn’t immediately obvious as nine cars rolled into Ken’s Garage at Kildary - where we all gathered for our trip. Along with some of our regular members we were joined by Alix & John on their first full outing having joined since the Tain Classic Car Show and non members Rob and Iona who had literally just discovered the MX5 Scotland website the day before and asked if they could come along. Along with the eight MX5’s we also had Peter & Kerry and their daughter Isla along for the run. However as three don’t fit into one of our cars (regardless of how small the third person is) they had to come along in their Audi at the back of our convoy (we do have standards!).
The rain was more of a drizzle now so roofs down we headed up to Lairg via Spinningdale and Bonar Bridge. Bobby & Debbie decided to get the ‘wrong turn’ out of the way early and after a brief visit to the churchyard in Spinningdale (note – no lighthouse involved this one) we carried on our way to The Pier in Lairg for bacon rolls and scones.
We then carried on North West on surprisingly quiet roads as we left Lairg heading for Durness. All nine cars had CB radios in the car but the banter was a bit subdued on this trip. Perhaps having the new members along was making everybody a bit more well behaved than usual or maybe it more to do with the fact that as Bobby was leading he was having to concentrate too much on his driving! There were certainly smiles aplenty when after trying to work out why the lead cars signal was so faint Debbie admitted to trying to talk into the wrong side of the mic!!!!
Although single track – the road north was a good surface and we were enjoying the twists and turns as our convoy danced North West. As we reached the west coast the weather was slowly improving and we dared to see who would be the first person to actually spot some blue skies. Frankie & Brian won that one as driving past the Kyle of Durness a glimpse of blue could be seen across the grey sky. A quick photos stop at the Kyle of Durness then onto lunch at the Smoo Cave Hotel in Durness.
After lunch we headed to Balnakeil beach where our lead car had eluded we may be going to have a re-match from the famous rounders competition we started in Lewis a few months ago. They led us down onto the beach with bat and ball in hand only then to announce that today we would be having a sand castle competition instead! Our members threw themselves at this one and soon there was sand going everywhere. At the end of the build Rob and Iona were awarded the prize for best sand castle with a sand MX-5.
After this entertainment we then went to Cocoa Mountain for some well earned chocolate!
We then headed east and round the north coast, stopping to enjoy the views at both the Loch Eribol and Kyle of Tongue viewpoints. It really is glorious country up here. Once past Tongue we then started our journey south and through to Altnaharra and a refreshment stop at the highest pub in the land at Crask.  The roads remained remarkably clear for mid July and most motorists were sensible enough to pull over and let our nine cars through.
Leaving Crask we then headed back to Lairg to complete the loop we had started in the morning. The weather was starting to deteriorate (maybe we had enjoyed the best weather after all!) and the call came out to ‘box’ (ie put roof up) before we headed across the Struie. With deteriorating weather we said some quick goodbyes at Skiach before we all went our own ways home.
Driving home in the rain and seeing the size of the puddles you could see it had been raining here for some time. Maybe Bobby had arranged the weather for us after all?
