Chips in Ullapool

With the first shower of the day clearing away, two cars left Inverness for points North and West. At Skiach the usual suspects joined in but with the bonus of Richard and Katherine for their first club run, hopefully not their last. A red Mk2 intruder was spotted at the tail of our convoy so we pulled in to find out who he was only to have him roar past, oh well, on to the viewpoint looking into the Dornoch Firth, spectacular as usual and there was the red Mk2 who then joined the group for the section to Shin.
A short walk to see the Falls and as the café has not been replaced since the fire it was on to Lairg and The Pier Restaurant for coffee and carbs. Timing it nicely the duty rain shower passed through as we left and we were given a fine run with some spectacular views of Suilven when the showers allowed. Lunch was at The Seaforth in Ullapool, with chips of course. Our Newbies decided to head back home from here so 4 cars turned right onto the A832 for Gairloch. Shower dodging was quite successful until the Victoria Falls at Loch Maree where our luck ran out. Never mind, lots of rain gives good waterfalls. Kinlochewe was closed when we got there so no coffee and cake for us. On to Strathpeffer for an ice cream although with the temperature having been as low as 3 at one point this may not have seemed an exciting prospect. Imagine the scene, walking down the street towards the shop only to see the ice cream cone advert being carried inside by the shopkeeper and despite Ben and Shane racing ahead to plead our case the answer was ‘no, we’re closed’. So there we were, heads down, short on calories and nowhere to go except home. Are we downhearted, of course not, we’re going on holiday to the Hebrides in a fortnight and the sun will be shining.

Many thanks to all who took part today, except the unmarked police car on the Gairloch road that is, 200 miles on great driving roads, we are a lucky club to have all this on our doorstep.

Many thanks to all those that drove through the showers today, but especially to Douglas who had organised the day. Nice to meet Richard and Katherine and hope to see you again on another run soon. Also special mention to the couple from Nairn that joined our convoy for a while - you know where we are now!
