Eunos Roadster - Mazdaspeed B-Spec Stage II

Postby Scotty Dugg » Tue Aug 29, 2017 2:25 pm

For those that haven't seen on other forums, after threatening a couple times to get back in a 5 after selling the NC, I won a Eunos Roadster - Mazdaspeed B-Spec Stage II in a Facebook bonus ball raffle.

Paid a princely sum of £20.00, certainly my cheapest car to date.

Has been used as a drift car so very rough, but minimal rust.

From what I can find the Mazdaspeed B-Spec Stage II is putting out in the region of 170bhp.

I won't bother going into details but I'll post some images of when we got it and some of the work carried out so far:

Big ticket items fitted/re-fitted so far are: Torsen Diff, new Exedy Clutch and Gearbox, Entire Interior, Suspension Raised, Cobalt Exhaust, Non-Leaking Roof, Non-Faded Bootlid with spoiler.

Anyway, I'll try keep this up to date as we fit all future parts, it won't be concours level stuff but it will be my daily once complete.

Thanks,
Scott

The garage is below the size required by Human Rights Legislation.

Good Work.

Indeed JM, I think I'd have lost my sanity if I hadn't won it, nice to remember how much it cost when things aren't quite going to plan.

From what I can find A-Spec was trim only, whereas B-Spec is performance, came in 3 stages:
Stage 1:
1.6L - 130bhp (N/A)
1.8L - 145bhp (N/A)
Stage 2:
1.6L - 144bhp (N/A)
1.8L - 170bhp (N/A)
Stage 3:
1.6L - 170bhp (Supercharged)
1.8L - 180bhp (Supercharged)

What that came with and what I've still got:
- Four stage adjustable shocks (Replaced with HSD Dualtech).
- Harder springs with 30mm drop (Replaced with HSD Dualtech).
- Thicker anti-roll bars and strut braces (TBC).
- Harder shock mountings and lower bushings (TBC).
- Harder engine mounts (TBC).
- Up-rated Brake Pads (TBC/likely long gone).
- Up-rated Clutch (replaced with Exedy clutch assembly).
- Lightened Flywheel (Confirmed).
- High compression pistons and camshafts (TBC).
- Uprated Manifold/exhaust system (Replaced with RSR 4-1 Manifold/Cobalt Catback).
- Oil Cooler (Long gone).
- Short Shift (TBC).
- VLSD and up-rated mounts (Replaced with Torsen).

Have you considered buying regular Lottery tickets Scotty?

No but I did try that BOTB you see advertised a few times, to no avail!

So another weekend spent on the car, some stuff actually got put back on:

Gearbox had oil and new boots fitted allowing some of the interior to be put back in:
ImageMX5 NA 02/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
Drivers door replacement was fitted along with a replacement electric door mirror, what a job that turned out to be:
ImageMX5 NA 02/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
Airbox removed for manifold swap, found a broken sensor on what we think is the power steering pump, also allow for the A/C compressor to be removed:
ImageMX5 NA 02/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
Old Manifold off, turns out it wasn't fitted correctly, RSR 4-1 manifold test fitted, a reducer to the cobalt cat-back system will solve where it's been cut and allow for easy fitting.
ImageMX5 NA 02/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
New door bushes:
ImageMX5 NA 02/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

No pictures of the refreshed window wipers, repaired floor stiffener, new lock set and ignition barrel fitted or the massive leak in the airbox (where it's sucked oil in from the engine bay), oh and to top it off the Lambda sensor that was fitted wasn't working either.

Bought a smaller Nardi wheel and D1-Spec slim quick release, but don't have the earth ring with tab for fitting so can't get the horn to fit/work yet.

Anyone know where these can be bought from? Can only find a Momo counterpart on Ebay.

Great to see such a tired example coming back to life, especially when it's an interesting model. Great pictures. Please keep posting 'em. :D

Thanks Enjay, tired/poorly modified by the previous owner, it seems to be par for the course that if you drift a car then it's fair game to bodge almost anything.

Which is a shame when you delve a little deeper and see someone has looked after it at some point in its UK tenure.

Anyway, reverting it back to its former glory/improving on what has been done, is why this has ended up taking so long. No chance to work on it this month will likely mean that it won't be on the road before everything gets salty.

I'm in the process of getting my horn to work with my NRG QR hub.

I have 2 of those earth rings in my pack.

If I can get everything working with just one (between the Nardi wheel and QR boss) then you are welcome to the other one bud.

I need to change one male spade connector for a female and see if everything works when wired up first.

Ah excellent thank you, that'd actually be a lifesaver if you do. From watching the MiataMods video on youtube, his quick release only needed the one on the steering coulomb side. Best of luck getting it fitted.

Got mine working last night with just one of those adaptors fitted between the Nardi wheel and the NRG QR hob. Black wire attached to the tab on the ring just fitted, other wire attached to the connector on the back of the horn push.

Everything works great so you are welcome to my spare adaptor if you'd like it?

If you are Edinburgh based you could come pick it up, if not, PM me with your address and I can stick it in the post?

That's very kind of you, thank you. Sent a PM to you but not sure if it sent as I was on a Norwegian Air plane at the time, they have free wifi!

Funnily enough managed to find them on ebay last night by chance, typical!

Some more to updates for this, I've not been working on the car but my dad has, he used to own a bright yellow Triumph Dolomite Sprint, sold a few years ago and I think he's been missing tinkering tbh.

Replacement wings and bumper that came with the car have been off to a family friend for paint, £23.00 in total, will look decent enough from 6ft away :D the rest of the paints in worse condition anyway.
ImageMX-5 13/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Got some more bits, some tinted front sidelight/indicators and some tinted rear lights as well as a Jass panel for above the radiator, it's for an ABS model but I can get some grommets for the holes. Also picked up a Zoom Engineering fuel lid, may refurbish and sell on or fit to the car, undecided currently.
ImageMX-5 13/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Also, got some stickers made up for the car from Ailsa at Team Beard, decided to name it "Project 52" as that's the lottery number that won the car and that's likely how many weeks before it gets back on the road!
ImageMX-5 13/09/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

I think that's about it for now, won't get near it until at least mid October. So it's looking less likely to be on the road this side of Christmas.

Cheers,
Scott

Finally an update, 2 months since I was last working on the car, 2 solid days of work in the garage :D

Disclaimer: phone photos have that instagram sheen edit to them (:))

How the weekend started, "Ed China" had cracked on in my absence:
ImageMX5 NA 29/10/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr
First off removing and changing the rear lights for some tinted alternatives, changing the light seals in the process (recommended job), as well as fitting all interior boot trim that we'd sourced:

Fitting weather seals to both doors and refitting all speakers and door cards as well as all dash trim after resetting the tacho needle:
ImageMX5 NA 29/10/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Fitting both front wings and the front bumper/air guide, undertray and GV Lip to follow:

Need to source an Eunos badge from somewhere, any recommendations where to go?
ImageMX5 NA 29/10/2017 by Scott Reid, on Flickr

Lots of other little jobs not worth mentioning, plan at present is to get an MOT before Christmas then SORN for the winter months.

Apologies for the messy garage!
