Mk3 tyre recommendations

Postby Macscorcher » Thu May 12, 2016 11:38 pm

I know & apologise for opening an age old can of worms with this post but interested to know what tyres people recommend from experience for a mk3 mx5 running 205/45/17s ?

Had Dunlop sp9000s on mine since I bought her but struggling to find a replacement pair now so tempted to try something different maybe Hankooks after previous good experience or Uniroyal Rainsport 3s ?

Any thoughts ?

I run Kumho (will check what version later). They seem to be commonly regarded as the tyre of choice for NC. I can't really fault them. Good in wet & dry, not too much flex, or noise, good grip, and they aren't too soft.

That said, I am a fan of Uniroyal Rainsport. Had them on previous cars and they are 2nd to none in the wet. My only gripe with them was that they were a tad soft and wore a bit quicker than I would have liked, especially 'rounding' on the edge of the tread. Tracking was spot on, they just seemed susceptible to enthusiastic cornering.

From my experience, I would recommend the Kumho for your NC.

There is no choice of type of Kuhmo as the only do one model of tyre for each of the specific Mk3 sizes 205 x 50 x 16, 205 x 45 x 17.

Ive just changed tyres on my MK3, within the past month.

Originally i had 2 khumo ecstas on the rear, toyo proxes tr1 and a p606 on the front. The size i have are 205/50/16.

I felt that the khumos were a bit slippy in the wet (especially nipping out a junction) and the front was just not right with the different grip levels on each corner.

I now have a set of toyo proxes cf2s all round and im happily impressed by them, they grip well in the dry and just keep holding on in corners (within reason ofc), their also quieter than the previous tyres.
They also feel a lot more stable at motorway speeds.

The weather so far has at worst been damp or bone dry but the tyres handled the damp well, better then the khumos on the rear.

Bear in mind that ive barely done 500 miles on the toyos though.

I got them from black circles for £66 a corner fitted.

Yes thee different tytres on an MX5 is a waste of time.

Four identical ones all round will be lots better therefore you comments on the tyres in that configuration is not relevent as they were fighting each other for grip and is a recipe for disaster.

Fairly sure you can get Kumho KU31 (Ecsta SPT) and Kumho KU39 (Ecsta LE Sport) in 205x45x17.

It's KU39 I have, which are generally regarded as the better of the two.

Ok folks thanks for the all the replies. Think I'm going to go with Rainsports. Next question is do I buy 2 or 4 as front Dunlops have very little wear but I know mx5s are very sensitive to mid matched tyres ?

See how they go?
If it does not work out, ditch the fronts then match them up.
There is always an imbecile you never bargained for. Usually in a Tescon carpark with a dented Zafira minus hubcaps

Sensible advice. Put good tyres on the rear to start with as you can deal with understeer but snap oversteer is not so nice.. but then maybe you like oversteer.. you did get a 5 after all!

Hello folks just thought I'd update this post. Ended up going for a full set of the Uniroyals.

Done over 500miles now so safe to say they're bedded in lol. I'm impressed so far seem to have loads of grip to spare & plenty of feel.
