Engine warning light

Postby alex mcbay » Tue Dec 29, 2015 9:11 pm

My 2005 -40,000 mile, 1.8 litre MX-5 Icon was taken out on a frosty day for a spin and after first time start the engine warning light came on and has remained on since. The car starts and runs normally (tested for 38 miles at max speed of 55mph) but light stays on and I cannot find any fault. Engine Oil and brake levels are normal Any ideas would be appreciated

Do exactly as instructed if you think you know better do not read on.

Disconnect battery and move the battery leads away from the battery.

Leave off for 20 minutes that does not mean out it back right away again read the first line of this reply.

Before reconnecting battery push the brake pedal down a few times.

Reconnect the battery.

Does the warning light stay on or is it off.

If it is off sorted.

Next step if the light is still on.

Lift the passenger side carpet again read the top line as most people know better and just feel the top of the carpet.

You may well have to lift off the kick plate that sits on top of the sill.

Is the metal surface of the floor wet and on the front firewall where the passenger would put their feet.

There is a couple of silver boxes with a frame around them, are they wet and is there any rust on the frame that holds them in place.

Reply with your findings for further instructions in possible fault finding.

Yes but the Mk3.5 has the ecu at bonnet level so no need to lift carpets.

The Mk2.5 that the poster has also tends to have a tendancy to come on with no stored code in the ECU memory.

I see. When I investigated the work necessary to replace the EGR, I sold the car!
