What a mess!

Postby Ginger Nuts » Sun Nov 08, 2015 5:55 pm

Spent the last week or two with the car on a small set of ramps in the garage while I scrabbled around under it armed with a wire brush and a grim determination.

Now after coating the front end of the car, subframe, chassis rail, garage floor, me, with rust inhibitor and hammerite waxoyl. I just need to get both front wheels off and empty a couple of rattle cans of some more waxoyl into the bits my brush and arm can't reach.

It has been without doubt the messiest, smelliest job I have ever attempted and I've done a couple of stinkers!

Going to have to gee myself up to reverse it in to the garage, whip of the back bumper and do it all again.

On the plus side I located an undertray in Arbroath for not a lot and my £1 front grill from the scrappies has cleaned up great and looks fab with a bit of plastidip on it.

Think I will need to keep a watch on fleabay and gumtree for a spray gun in the future, don't fancy doing the waxoyl with a brush again next year.

Off now for a hot shower!

Anyone who does rubbing down and waxoyl with just axle stands or small ramps deserves a medal or a stay in a mental hospital

I had been attempting the same , axle stands ect but when I took the car to the garage and we had it up on 4 point lift you could see everything so much easier and reach all the nooks and crannies , for me Im sure my brother has a pit in his garage so when he returns i will use that

cheers D

I did my last 5 myself using axle stands. It was a horrible, messy minging job.

This time I paid the experts to do it!

There are some advantages to age as you know when to give the crap jobs to someone else.

1st Mx5 - 46yrs old now and scratching an age old itch.

To be fair, it's a 93 import and owes me nothing and I aim to keep it that way. Hence everything I do with it is going to be kept to minimum cost.

On this occasion however, I think £200 to get a garage to spray the bejeezus out of it would have been money well spent.

Ahh well, It's money saved toward rear shocks - a set of matching boots, alignment and cat bypass.

Was pleasantly surprised when it passed its first MOT in my care needing just a rear caliper!

Getting SORN at the end of the month so plenty time to spend more filthy weekends listening to 5Live while I tinker away.

A man of simple pleasures me you know.

sounds like a horrible job but you'll be glad when it's finished. Don't suppose you fancy doing mine ? Hmm, thought not :)

SORN through the winter is the best anti corrosion treatment going! Miss some great cold, bright days though. Mine's off the road now, tucked up in the shed.

Will probably get a quote from them at spring time. See how it compares with the garage that I use. Thanks for the contact

I can highly recommend them. Got my 91 Eunos done there in October.
