What is it?

Postby Rostra » Sat Oct 31, 2015 3:01 pm

Looking into the boot of my 5 (American spec), just inside at the right hand side (carpet removed) there is what appears to be a breather tube or some such thing - transparent plastic, right angle bend at the top. Anyone know what it is?
Blessed are the cracked, for they let in the light.

Hi, I think it may be the vent tube for the battery.

Does it have the original Panasonic battery or has someone put a euro size 63 in that is a bit too big and with no nipples to connect into the vent tubes.

Ah - that rings a bell. Not the original battery, but I seem to remember being told this when I first bought the car. Thanks :D

You need to ensure that the non-standard battery does not emit corrosive fumes into the boot space. Many MX5s have suffered severe corrosion of the boot floor as a result of fumes.

Thanks Malcolm (and how are you both?) No sign of corrosion in the boot, so I think the sealed battery must be OK.

Just had a merry day taking my new soft top off and refitting it the RIGHT way so that the boot will not fill with water in the next tropical storm. Second time I've had to do that!! Why don't mechanics listen???

We are doing fine thanks Angie. Currently trying to get to Amsterdam tomorrow but fog at Schiphol has cancelled our original flight. Fingers crossed for the new flight.
