If we look at the Mk3 it was around a year into production before the power hard top became available.

It would appear the large number of people who were doing the monthly PPL and changing to another car some three years later are most cost aware customers and in droves bought the softop 1.8 car as that was the most inexpensive monthly cost.

It appears the longer term buyers went for the PRHT and the 2 litre engine.

The PRHT was around 35kg heavier than the softop car and as such an issue was paid to weight reduction on the Mk4 that the PRHT was less important than getting a car onto the market as sales possibly slow down some time next year it may well be that Mazda do something to increase sales.

Thanks Eddie, do you prefer the PRHT to the soft top?

I bought a soft top over a hard top because it's in the spirit of a traditional roadster - which is what the MX5 is. It looks the part and it has an old world charm; it's not yet another automated feature - think automatic headlights, wipers etc. I prefer to do all these things myself, it is involving and gives me control.

Keep yer fancy roofs for TT's and the like; cars that need gimmicks to make up for their shortfall in driving dynamics or charisma. :D

I suppose the soft top does look more sports car like, any other pros and cons?
