Can you get a dog in the back

Postby Drumnagorrach » Fri Jun 26, 2015 6:00 pm

Hi Folks.
Just registered because I quite fancy an MX 5 ,but need to ask ,not only what to look for,but is it possible to get a medium sized dog behind the seats?
From pictures of the ones for sale there doesn't seem to be any room if the top is down, maybe a way of getting the hood out of the way ?
Cheers
Lee

You will need to leave your wife/GF at home and put the dog in the passenger footwell or seat. It should be strapped in as well.

I have seen small dogs on rear shelf on Mk1's and Mk2's collies and spaniels, our large Yorkie Jake often sits/lies there. buts anything a bit bigger then wife must be left at home 11 a good idea maybe !! oh oh !! Jen just kicked me

Thanks for the replies, So all is not lost then ? Our fairly large ,(as Staffies go )might fit in the back ?
None of the current two seater soft tops appeal ,but the MX5 is like the Cars I had 30 years ago, All Triumphs, a couple of Spitfires ,a GT6 and Two Tr6's,all of them had room for a dog in the back.I had been toying with getting another Spitfire but they are mostly 40 years old now,and would probably be quite slow by modern standards.
Any chance of someone posting a pic of the space behind the seats?
I am located between Keith and Banff, anyone in that area who would show me theirs, car that is ?

There is no space behind the seats. There is a parcel shelf but it is entirely taken up by the hood when it is dropped, and the hood can't be moved out of the way. Even when the hood is up there is hardly room for anything. To be honest, if you're planning on taking your dog as well as a passenger then an mx5 probably isn't the right car for you.

Well Eddie your answer was rather terse and some of the other answers were offering a bit of hope .
They are very nice wee cars and sometimes ,where there is a will ect.

This brings back memories of putting up with a very flatulent Cocker Spaniel all the way from Scotland to Charmouth in a VW Beetle.."Paddy" seeming to enjoy gassing us from his personal compartment behind the back seat. If we could have somehow linked his ars* up to the carb, we'd have gotten there quicker than the available 40BHP allowed. That is all.

My answer is simple and correct as I said you appear to have decided what answer you wanted to hear.

I don't think you would get any size of dog in the back of an MX5.

However if you come along to our next meeting in Nairn on Sunday 12th July you can have a look as I'm pretty sure we will have all models sitting in the car park for you to have a look at.

The one thing that has not been mentioned is quite simply the safety aspect of either an emergency stop or even a light "front ender".
It would surprise some how a miniature poodle has the kinetics of a bull mastiff at 30mph...eg it'll break your neck on a bad day never mind kill the dog.
Sorry to seem a Grim Reaper, but that's the bottom line for me.
If you need to take a dog everywhere, or with a ad-hoc whim, brutal though it may seem, I do not think a 5 is the right choice of chariot.
