MK1 Eunos

Postby scottg17 » Tue Feb 11, 2014 3:06 am

Hi all!
I'm Scott 23, from Ross-Shire :)

Picked up my first mx5 at the back end of last year and so far I love it, has an mx5Scotland tax disc holder hence leading me here, done a few small jobs to tidy it up a bit

Was bog standard except a style bar , mx5parts cat back and a CD player. Was a nice solid car when I picked it up but noticed some rust just beginning before the Xmas on my sills :'( so....got myself a mig welder and got to work, thankfully the inner sills had some surface rust but we're as solid as the rock of Gibraltar :) never tackled rust before but just remained methodical and persevered my way through and I'm now left with a solid little mx5 :) normally I'm terrible with project cars and bite off more than I can chew! Promised myself I'll stick in with this one!

So... As I bought her :)

Thanks :) driven a mk1 and mk2 before I got my one, mk1 had more character IMO was sold on getting one ;)

Washed and parked in the garden as the weather is getting a bit shoddy again :/

On the hunt for a mariner blue bootlid if anyone knows of any about, have a bit of bubbling on the lip, minor inconvenience but I'm a touch meticulous haha

Been a bit busy again with it!

MOT's out and needing a bit of work done, Shells in great nick now I took care of the sills so happy at that!

Needing done

Petrol Tank - was leaking (have a new one sitting to go on)

2 front lower balljoints (on the way)
Rear O/S caliper (on the way)
discs and pads front and rear

Done
Briaded brake lines all round
New copper pipes all round

Going to take the opportunity to protect the underside a bit whilst the back subframe is out on the deck, hearing dinitrol or bilt hambers the best stuff to use??

Subframes in the middle of getting a coat of paint before it goes back in but the weather hasnt been to kind the last wee while

Getting there slowly

Started stipping things down, going to be getting a dinitrol kit on payday so I can get it all protected from rust! hence the wings of so I can get in behind them

Both bad balljoints are out, rear caliper is waiting to go on, will be getting a couple of front shocks as well.

all going well, do the above plus discs and pads and then its MOT time

Fingers crossed!

Yep, I'm doing pretty much exactly the same thing, as we speak!
My 'Dinitrol' kit arrived today, unfortunately within the first 30 seconds of work the lance clogged up, and hasn't cleared out (even with boiling water...

Good looking job. Try heating the dinitrol containers in hot water before trying to spray. It helps to stop the spray head clogging up.

Cheers guys!

Well some good news and some not so good news

The good news is I have a set of struts ready painted up to be fitted on

Then there was one of that moments when your feel like busting I to tears, cleaning things up a bit and treating the underside before it's dinitrol treatment and I found some dreaded metal cancer, one side Looks like it's been bottomed out and the rust is a knock on effect, other side wasn't half as bad, anyway I managed to straighten out the bad bit of the chassis leg as best I can, chopped out the rust and made some repair plates, had to do them this way due to where the rust is so I'll be welding the new plate onto the front chassis section (thicker bit) and overlapping the area I've cut out, all the rust has been cut away so a bit of galv weld through primer on the insides and a good bit of cavity way and underseal over it it'll probably out survive the rest of the car! Thanfullt I've been round the rest of the car and I'm happy to say there's no more rot or grot, think I'm getting off pretty lightly being it's a 24 year old jap car that's had no tlc other than the factory underseal underneath! Disheartening but I shall persevere and get on with it :) More updates to follow

Very tidy and methodical work.

At this rate, you are going to have a very straight little car by the time you have finished!

Cheers! 8)

Patches welded in place tonight, not particularly neat as I'm not the handiest at welding and lack of space underneath wasn't helping lol, main thing is the welds seem strong and most importantly clean to clean steel, once I get a good few thick coats of underbody wax all about it it will hide quite well ;) function over looks this time!
