scottish mx5 championship 2013

Postby Giggsy » Sun Sep 16, 2012 11:45 pm

Hi i'm just puting a few words on the forum about an mx5 championship the Scottish Motor Racing Club (SMRC) are starting next year.

I'll be racing in the championship next year and have just purchased a car to built, I spend quite alot of time at Knockhill and happened to notice a fair number of mx5's going around on track days, there is no more popular series in th UK than the British mx5 Championship with as many as 90 mk1 mx5's turning upto events all over th UK.

This is also the intention of the SMRC to create a popular RWD one make series,to be cheap, fun and competetive, Interest is high in the new series already,

There are 3 cars already built, that are racing in the Saloon and Sports car class, with another 2 well under build. There is a very real posibility there could be 10 cars built by known parties interested in the new series, and that number could increase further.
If there are any interested parties then just slip me an email with any questions.

Also if requested some of the cars can be viewed at Knockhill Racing Circuit

The cars are mk1 eunos's

Any questions just email !

Thanks again

Geraint

Thanks for the heads up, I (and I'm sure plenty of others on here) would be interested in keeping up with progress and finding out when events are running.

Cheers

Are they going to get their own race series if there is enough interest?

Do you know if any cars currently for sale? I seen one out in the last race and there ended up being a huge difference between the 3 cars.

I'll speak to my colleague and see if there's any cars available, are you interested and if so, what's your budget ?

At the last meeting there were 3 mx5's racing in the Saloon and Sports car race, they were spread out quite a bit, but don't be put off by that, there were various reason:

1) They were spread out by other cars being fast up the straight but slower on the corners, the main reason we need more cars for our own race.
2) The drivers have different levels of experience.
3) These races mean absoulutely nothing in terms of results, the purpose of the cars racing this year is to increase awareness in what we're trying to achieve next year. There has been high interest from mx5 owners from up and down the country.

The next SMRC meeting is this weekend, testing on Saturday & racing on Sunday. There is another car being built and hopefully it'll be ready for this weekends racing.

ICR Motorsport is running the mx5's currently racing, and is based half way along the garages at the top of the main paddock, they also run fiesta ST's

If there's anybody up on Sunday and are interested go and have a look around the cars, they are kept as standard as possible to keep costs down and are definitely going to provide close racing.

Everyone will have different opinions on the budget you need.

I paid :

£600 for all my Race Wear
£850 for my MK1 eunos
£2400 approx for kit to turn standard car into race car. (excluding labour)

£250x7 for entry fees

My best advice would be to speak to people that have more experience than me!

How time was charged roughly for the work? What about race support?

That's the last round of the SMRC. There were 4 MX5's on the grid on Sunday, should of been 5 if it weren't for one of the drivers to crash his road car in a big way on Saturday night.

Sunday presented itself with the first MX5 cup champion, and a new lap record, the racing was better than before and only looks to improve.

the season is over, and with time now to prepare for next year, it is certainly time to show your interest, if you are interested next year.

There is already potentially another 6 cars going to be built, taking the total to 11.

With the amount of donar cars and parts prices, I believe this will grow in time to be the biggest championship Scottish racing has saw in a long time. Perhaps the biggest.

Hi,

I am hoping to start racing in this series in the future. I had hoped to have bought a car by now and started to transfrom it in to a race car but that hasnt worked out. My plan is to get a car and start doing some track days this summer, maybe looking at starting a race at the end of the season or next season at the latest.

I am based in Aberdeen, are there any others from Aberdeen racing or tracking there MX5?

Also does anyone know anyone in aberdeen who wants to rent there garage or share there double garage, This seems to be my biggest roadblock at the moment.

Look forward to much more involvement on this forum
