NSE - Pitlochry for Whisky - March 21st. 09:50

Postby IanH » Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:23 pm

Depart Morrisons Inverurie at 09:50 to head up to the Moulin hotel for lunch and then on for a tour of the Edradour distillery (£5 a head) and a chance to restock your top shelf. A wee run back through NSS area if the weather is decent enough.

Distillery tour and/or lunch at the Moulin are all optional elements, just let us know if you'd like to do your own thing in Pitlochry.

The route could be something like that in the post further down this thread below;

Names in all the usual places, nearer the time we'll collate them all and post a list of who's signed up for what.

As there are approx three cars coming from the Mearns we would probably meet the main run at Dinnet assuming this provisional route is confirmed.
Ere, Lunch for MX5ers is never optional!!!!!!!!

We have just driven a good part of the NSE route to Pitlochry in the reverse direction and comments as follows.

Starting from Drumtochty Glen with the hood down. Cairn o Mount is still closed but should be open this week.

Road via Fettercairn, Edzell, small roads to Kirremuir, Blairgowrie, Dunkeld then A9 to Pitlochry.. All clear of ice and snow and dry.
The Moulin Hotel was still there!
The road from there to the A93 was clear. Same with the A93 up to the Ski Centre at Cairnwell. The road is narrow through the SKI Centre but as usual, it did not look like the Alps, more just damp and dull.

Loads of snow from there to Ballater, ice on the Dee but all roads clear.

Gardens and parks in Ballater and Braemar still full of snow.

Put up hood at 5 pm in Ballater.
From there to Banchory less and less snow, clear roads.

“Famous Last Words”

There will be no problem with the weather!

Cairn o'mount might be closed to most... just not all
Missed this batch of snow but did it about 8 times last time it was closed and had to help a couple in the doing. Does get interesting in 4-5" of pure slush where you need to lock the front axle to keep the front on the road as 4x4 drifts for 3-4 miles are kind of hard to hold!
Just need snow tyres not a Subaru Eddie!

The postie thinks there is a bridge problem on the road rather than a snow problem.

Will find out Monday!!

Consider that Cairn o'Mount will be closed for the run as the bridge or the road at Glen Dye has subsided due to flooding.

No date is avaiable for a repair.

Just a heads up, the Garioch 10K is this Sunday starting from the Sports Centre close to Morrisons, the Kids race is at 10:30 and the Adults at 11:30 so it should not impact on us but the area is likely to be busier than usual for a Sunday.

We will meet you guys at the crossroads at Dinnet on the main Deeside Road in the morning. To remove any possible problem we will be there at 10:00am.

Roll up roll up.

Right folks, can we make this the last chance to stick your name down for the event. Please send your mobile numbers to Lorraine or Ian so we can keep tabs on you. Sorry to say but if we don't have a firm committment that you are coming then we may drive off without you and eat your chips!

:D [color=#FF0Hi Liathatch! - Looks as tho' all or most of us will be joining up at some point if so will be a massive display of MX-5's - bet mine is dirtiest should have a comp category for that? Will you be there? I am going to be there- and owing to booking stuff- will be- as suggested winging it- and just have a great time - if both of the runs do merge should make a good display, as the pram said!- will need wide angle lens tho'! Will have to set off at 7am to meet up south of Tay Road Bridge- Inverurie is a tad too far North for me- I don't own my own petrol station yet!! Be great to see you there - if you can make it!

The Cairn O Mount is now open.

The road bridge at Bridge of Dye is now repaired.

Just drove up and had a look.
