NMC - Bose / Tivoli / Teac / Creative Soundworks....

Postby IanH » Thu Aug 07, 2008 10:32 pm

Thinking about purchasing a 'decent quality' all in one radio (£150+), preferably with DAB for the bedroom. I'm not really fussed if it can do MP3, CD or whatever but if it does that's an added bonus.

Does anyone have personal experience of this kind of device?

I heard a Bose Wave device at a wedding recently and was blown away by the amount and clarity of the sound it could punch out. However at around £500 (for the DAB version) and having read comments about the lack of adjustment to bass/treble I would have to be well convinced there was not something as good or better at significantly less.

Ian, can't comment on the radio side of things but certainly the Bose items I have heard and the one we have (ipod dock) are brilliant. Yes they cost a lot but maybe you get what you pay for. We have a Pure Evoke 1xt DAB radio in the kitchen which has pretty good sound. Is DAB not going down the tubes soon?

I think there's discussion about adopting a more efficient codec as used elsewhere that gives better quality for the same bandwidth. Existing DAB sets are not compatible with this codec but I don't think it's going to disappear totally anytime soon.

Ah right. Not so bad then. Still no answer to your question though, sorry. Have you tried Sound and Vision on Crown St? They seem pretty good at this sort of thing.

The Big Smoke is nae that bad Ian. We often let foreigners in :wink: You could try the Sevenoaks website if you really don't want to travel this far :shock:

Come on .. Richer Sounds .. cheap skate land.. Afraid you really have to go to the City as it is Edinburgh/Glasgow.

http://www.richersounds.com/splashpage.php

Bought a compact CD/radio and then some decent British mini speakers for ex other half.. think it was getting nearer £300 but very nice quality.. certainly beyond the Bose experiance (which IMHO is more marketing quantity than quality (had I better start running...)); it is better than Sony etc .. but really not up to basic hi-fi standards. Plus each continent has their own preference for speakers.. guess USA is not mine!

Now of course that has blown Ian's budget..

Here it is still on sale at £150 (comes with remote too..) .. no DAB but DAB sound quality stinks (sorry.. old school full cream CD's only for me!)... http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct ... -CR425-SIL

If you insist on DAB then for £225 you can get the same thing;
http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct ... =1&region=

.. but no Speakers :cry:
..but for £50 you can get some mini Gales;
http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct ... -3010S-BCH

.. then £10 on cable... feeling rich?

Blow Bose Away :lol: .. but have you got the room... I seem to remember it had a clock and a timer on it too.. so it would shut down after a while.. not a good as the alarm clock feature on my hi-fi to wake up but close..

Or you could go for one of these :

Great sound, Amazing looks (the wife hates it !)

(I got a budget DAB radio for Christmas a few years ago and it is literally used as a doorstop as the sound is so poor)
