North West Highlands ....

Postby ceathorne » Fri May 30, 2008 12:22 am

Just back from a wee blast around the North-West :D

Larkhall - Inverness - Ullapool.
Overnight camp .... (my car is manky - as always!)
Image

Climb Stac Pollaidh .... (again!)
Image

Get settled into cottage overlooking the Summer Isles near Achiltibuie ...
Image

Drive as far North West as possible on superb roads ...
Image
Image

don BIG rucksacks and head into Sandwood Bay for overnight camp ....
Image
Image

Enjoy solitude of empty beach 5 miles from nearest road ... and cook dinner while sun is setting ...

Take last photo of sunset before camera dies ( ' Zoom Error ' - I think it means 'Don't like sand very much' )
Image

Imbibe lots of falling down water, sleep soundly and wake up next day with sand in ears, up nose, and in places where I didn't know I had places

Leave tents, sleeping bags, most of big rucksacks etc. in situ ...

Walk back out with team 'A', change socks, restock with water, and walk back into camp with team 'B'

Repeat previous night - with equally good sunset and more falling down water :D

Break camp, humpf on big rucksacks and walk out (again!)

Couple of nights rest in the cottage, then load up the Roadster and head down to Garve, across through Torridon to Loch Carron.

Then up and over the 'Pass of the Cattle' to overnight at Applecross campsite. (and much falling down water in the Inn)

Next day, wee run - Applecross - Sheildaig - Gairloch - Garve - Loch Carron then over the pass to Applecross in thick mist (couldn't see 10ft in front!)

Overnight at Applecross, then over the pass for the last time , around Loch Carron, coffee at Eilean Donan Castle, petrol at Fort William, lunch in Glencoe, take a left to Callander and then back down the road to sunny Larkie ...

1200 miles and my wee bonnie black beastie never missed a beat :D

( Sorry for long post, but I kinda got into my stride :D )

Looks like a great holiday. The pictures are grand too. I like the wee cottage. Where is that? I wish my tent would fit in car so we could go for wee trips like yours.

I haven't been up that area for a couple of years and you've just reminded me what I'm missing. I need to get over there this year.

Nigel, our planned weekend trip for August will be over the west coast if that is of interest. I have something in mind already and it takes in Poolewe, Shieldaig and up round that way. Not set in stone yet. PM me if you want a sneak preview of the route.
