Hello, this is my first post to any forum. I have wanted an MX5 for a long time now and have finally decided that I will get one in the new year once hubby has settled into his new job.

Can't decide between a late model Mk1 or early Mk2, any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome! The advice is buy one
The late Mk1 1.6 are a bit underpowered compared with, well anything else really. The early 1.6 was a better engine.

Hello :D

I'd go early Mk2 - it's more refined but look out for rust.
Avoid late Mk1 1.6 if you can - go for a 1.8.

Whatever you choose, get the hood down, find a twisty B road, and enjoy the best wee sportscar money can buy! :D

Difficult choice, they are all good cars.
I'm with Kevin, even though I love my MK1.

Mk1's...arguably the purist choice, or determined by budget.
Classic lines, quicksilver chassis, will need a bit more TLC perhaps...they are getting on now. Once sorted though, stable reliability & hugely rewarding to own & drive.
Mine has done 74,000 miles, is essentially corrosion free, and just sailed through it's MOT.

Mk2/ wife has one. Much more refined, lots more passive safety features. Great lookers. More comfortable, more toys...but some say "softer"...opinions differ. Bullet proof mechanically as well.
Crucially...try a examples of both...can be a question of personal taste, practicality, and affordability.
Let us know if you fancy a nice MK2...we will tell you if there is anything, over and above what Kevin said, that you should look for.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I have little preference to the Mk, I went shopping for a Mk 1 and bought a Mk 2,

What is crucially important is the colour. Silver cars are infinitley more cool and happening, anything else is just , well, just not good enough.

Enjoy it when you get it, there is loads of advice and help available from here, a friendly bunch.

Hello there. Agree with Douglas. Any one will keep you happy. Would also agree with trying them all out. I'm sure the one that is right will be obvious.
