hi there

Postby pixo » Mon Oct 08, 2007 6:55 pm

I am currnetly looking for a new car at the moment, and have been drawn to either a mr2 or a 5, both have their pros and cons, have had a lot of good feedback regarding the 5 and if I am able to get my hands on a good one I think I will go for that.

In the past I have had a couple of FTO's which I loved but now for something a wee bit different.

Oh! I'm in Kirkcaldy

the 5 is a way better car due to the fact of the build quality that alone sells it not to mention all the other bonuses like style look and power

Depends what mark of MR2 your looking for. If it's the last one then you won't be taking it to Asda if you've got a passenger

Having owned both a 5 and an MR2 i could maybe give you a list of pro's and cons :)

These are all my opinion of course, so if people dont like what i say, dont read.

MX5
Pro's
Good fun to drive
Cornering is good
easy to get the roof down
parts slightly cheaper than the MR2
Huge market of spares availible.
Pretty fun car to drive all round

Cons
Could do with a bit more power as standard in my opinion.
look a bit daft to me with lashings of chrome (the mx5 is after all an affordable roadster, and the chrome interiors just dont suit)
noisy to drive
Hard top not always in the sale, costs a pretty penny for one!

MR2 ( just gonna rate a mk2)

Pro's
Got the power
( in my opinion) nicer ride quality.
quiet to drive with the roof on.
Roof's storable in the car if you buy a T-Bar
Similar market for parts.
Engines go to 300k if you take it easy

Cons

Dangerous in the wet if your not careful
ba***** to change the engine if you pop it.
Can be difficult to get used to as they have very little weight in the front, but once you get used to them your fine.
If your unlucky enough to have a head on collision, say good bye to your ankles if its a bad one

Can safely say i had a lot of fun in the MX5 but the MR2 for me just now is winning more of my love and admiration.

Which ever car you choose i'm sure you'll enjoy it, as they both have very fine qualities.

Would have to disagree with some posters who said the 5's have higher build quality as Toyota have been anal as hell with the MK2 mr2's and although mazda went with the whole rider and horse ( jinbai tai is it?) Toyota have created a very fine car.

Check out the MR2 official club as well as this club, test drive both if you can.

Try and find a super or turbo charged 5 if your after more power and compare it to a turbo mr2 to see which you prefer.

As i've said. both cars are good fun, and similar in ways, but you have to drive them to fully apreciate both! :)
No more Mx5... but the MR2 is a beast and a half!

Performance over Chrome!!!!

oh, forgot to mention... space in the mk2 MR2 is not bad at all!

Back boot is actualy very good space as it's deep, and if you take the spare wheel out from under the bonnet, you've even more room

I mucked about in a few cars on test drives before I decided to get an MX-5.

I really liked the MK3 MR2 so here's my rundown:

I could get the roof up and down sitting inside which I can't do in my car.
I loved the way it drove - nimble.
Similar ish power and weight to the MX-5 I bought.

However, there really is almost no space to put anything - no boot to speak of and the roof folds into most of the cubby behind the driver.

I'm 6'4" and I fit in the Mazda ever so slightly better. That and I could take more than 3 biscuits and a toothbrush with me.
