Margam Park Spring Rally

Postby graeme » Mon Nov 29, 2004 10:23 pm

One of the possible events suggested for Margam ?05 was the ?Great Gambo Race?.

?Gambo? is a local Welsh word for a soap box cart.

The proposal is that a team of people from each area construct a Gambo that can be disassembled and brought to the rally in pieces (so it fits in the available transport!). The vehicles will then be assembled by a "pit crew" (ie the people who brought it) at the rally site area during the weekend and the race(s) will be held the Great Race during Sunday?s Rally.

There will be some kind of trophy for the winning area team.

Anyone up for going to South wales next year and also up for building a soapbox racer?

No problem Graeme, this topic will be worthy of its own heading, should be fun, wonder if I could talk someone into letting me borrow her wheels  can feel a extraordinary Tech Day coming on. Wheels, axels, steering, seat or something to lie down on for maximum aerodynamics, brakes..naw don't need em when you've got shoes, who said grille :!: ...Graeme can fit that  Mack can supply Greddy, Nos and wings (to begin with) may weigh a ton, cost a fortune, but will go like stink :D think we could use some of Mino's gadgets to supply the power.

ok any other ideas.

Gambo rules

Margam News...

Here are a few last minute details for this weekend's Rally.

Rally website: www.mx-5.org/south-wales/spring05

THEMED DRIVES
We will be providing route notes for the three themed drive to those who
come along on Saturday, but some of you have asked for advance copies.
So particularly if your hotel is in the Swansea area you may want to take a
look in case you end up driving back towards your hotel for the first part
of your drive. Or maybe, you just want to take a look.
Click on our rally website and follow the link either from the main page or
under the Saturday events section.

THE GREAT GAMBO RACE
The race is still on at 1pm, but we've extended to follow the FIA Grand Prix
format!
From 11am to 12noon there will be an open practise session for the teams to
test and hone the machines to their peak performance. Then from 12noon until
1pm there will be a series of timed qualifying runs, the results of which
will be displayed on the high-tech display system near the start line. Then
at 1pm it's the big race with all gambos lined up for the break-neck (!!)
run to the finish line.

SUNDAY DINING
There are three main options for food on Sunday.
1. The park has a cafeteria with hot and cold food and drinks.
2. The "Man with the Golden Wellies", better known as the owner of the Glam
Lamb company will be selling high quality, home reared Lamb in the form of
burgers or Lamb steaks with accompaniment.
3. You could picnic at the park.

TAKE HOME THE TASTE OF WALES
The Man with the Golden Wellies has asked us to let you know that he will be
selling his products for you top take away and enjoy at home. So if you
think you might be interested in that, bring a cool bag along (or buy one of
ours!!)

MERCHANDISE AND THE NEW LOGO
Those of you who are coming to Saturday Night's Twmpath will be able to
enjoy our Fashion Show where you can see many of the items in our brand new
Merchandise range featuring the new club logo.
On Sunday, Michelle and her band of helpers will be able to take orders for
any merchandise items you fancy.

There will also be the absolute last opportunity to buy the remainder of the
current range at crazy knock-down prices.

ASK THE DOCTOR
Not listed on the timetable as published, but Doctor Bob will be hosting two
40minute technical question and answer sessions in our show arena, so listen
out for the announcements.

WHO, WHERE, WHEN, WHY WHAT?
Each of our Rally helpers will be wearing very fetching bright Red Caps
featuring the new club logo. So if you have any problems or questions, "Ask
a Redcap"!!

WEATHER
Forecast looks reasonable for Sunday at the moment, but we are keeping our
fingers firmly crossed.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the weekend,

Your Spring Rally Organising Team

Post Margam News

From Mike Paddick:-

Hello all,

I just wanted to express our collective thanks to those of you who promoted
the Margam Park event to your local members.

My local team was fantastic and they all enjoyed the event in spite of the
work involved. It would have come to nought if it weren't for all those
happy, smiling faces at the Park.

Special thanks must go to those brave souls who entered the Gambo race. Also
to those of you who led groups of your members to the event, even if it was
just for the day.

We have a scheme now that I have decided to call "The Margam Memories
Project". The idea is to produce a CD/DVD with as many picture and videos as
possible of the event and offer it for sale to raise funds for our local
charity. I need to get the club's blessing for this and also to ensure that
anyone who contributes pictures is happy to waive any copyright they have.

So could I please ask you all to send me as many nice pictures as you can of
the weekend.

I especially like those who entered a Gambo to try to send me a picture of
your machine, if possible with the team who built and ran it.

I would also like to collect any *short* reminiscences of the weekend.

Kind regards,

Mike Paddick

From Mike of Margam.

One of my local members has produced a CD playable in home DVD players or
via a POC with a CD ROM drive with over 50 minutes of animated stills of the
Margam Park Rally. The pictures were donated by a number of the people who
attended the rally and some we took ourselves during the event.

We are selling them at ?4.00 each to raise funds for our local charity.

I have already written to everyone who registered for the event, but I
wondered if you would be so kind as to mention it to your members if you get
the chance?

Ordering information can be found at www.mx-5.org/south-wales/margam05/
<http://www.mx-5.org/south-wales/margam05/>

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Mike Paddick
