2018 Drumtochty Tech Day

Postby drumtochty » Fri Mar 02, 2018 9:02 pm

Drumtochty 2018 Tech Day, 28 April

We will be hosting another Tech Day at my Drumtochty Fettling Facility on Saturday 28th April 2018 and we will hopefully have as usual the Grampian and Tayside crew attending but if I can ask all existing and new attendees not to save all the jobs on your MX5 or Eunos until the Tech Day.

As those who attended previous tech days will know the main choke point is time on the 2 post ramp.

Image

Therefore can those people who want to do a full service with a full brake fluid flush or full brake change out or full under seal that will take time, please feel free to PM me and we can arrange a days lift time for you to do the work in a measured and non hurried way. Again if you are unsure of how long things will take PM me for info. In saying that an engine oil change, air filter change, antifreeze change and minor brake pad clean and re grease of brake sliders is possible.

This leaves the Tech Day for shorter jobs from 30 minutes to 1 hour that non technical people can look and learn on without getting too bored. It also gets more cars on the lift for shorter times allowing especially new members who are a bit more bashfull that the existing long term crew to get their cars on the lift and have their questions answered.

The garage will be open from 9:00 am and bacon rolls will be served from around 10:00 am with tea and coffee together with a buffet lunch. Biscuits will also be available.

If you just want to come along to see what is going on that is fine as we usually have a good selection of both the Grampian and Tayside members here.

You can watch what is going on in the garage or just have a chat to the assembled masses. Again if you are a single lady with an MX5 turn up you will be welcome or if you want to bring your other half along not an issue. It is not in the least 100% technical most people are there for the social side.

For the avoidance of doubt no financial contribution is either expected or will be accepted from any visitors to the Tech Day.

Can members or visitors please post what jobs they want to do on their cars and where they are coming from to allow those traveling a distance or only wanting a quick underside inspection to be put on the lift earlier.

With regards to the work that can be done on the day.

A full engine, gearbox and diff oil change is possible but not a full major service as that would require the wheels off and the brakes fluid changed unless you come later in the afternoon.

An antifreeze change is no problem.

A full brake check and lube of disc pad sliders is fine but a full change of pads and disks would be dependent on how many cars are coming that day.

An underside inspection and checking under the wheel arch liners can be done but not the clean out of the arches and application of cavity wax as that takes too long and creates too much mess for a tech day. We can probably if you want do some protection of the underside with wax or stone chip but not cavity wax injection as that needs everyone else to leave the garage apart from those wearing a mask therefore needs it’s own day.

Clearing drains or lubing window slides is easy as is a simple spark plug change.

If you are bringing a MK3 and want to service it, please advise me by personal message of the Reg Number to allow a Mazda check sheet to be generated and conformation of the work to be entered on the service record.

If you advise which jobs you would like to do I will advise if it is reasonable or if that needs a day on it's own.

Directions will be posted a day or so prior to the event.

Eddie - scones or no scones I will be happy to come along!
Hoping for underbody inspection, see how you go about lubing window slides and adjusting fanbelt.
Would aim to be there back of 9 - looking forward to it as ever!

Bob,

I'm sure Lorraine, aka the Sheriff, seen here rust proofing her Mk4 will be delighted with the name change you have proposed for her.

Hi Eddie,

Hoping to make this one after many years of other things getting in the way.

Update - should be able to make it. No service work needs doing on mine but I'd very much like an underside inspection if we can fit that in? Will be there as close to first thing as I can manage.

Cheers,
Dave

As I understand it, Raymond  turned up late, found himself at the back of the Q, got miffed, and shot them all.

2 Mk1's

2 Mk2.5's

8 Mk3's

and a white Car

Both Tayside and Grampian cars.

The good lady had to make a dash to Stonehaven to see her old Mum so two of the guys made Bacon Rolls and filled Rolls so the troops were kept happy.

Plenty cups of tea and biscuits available.

Both Mk1's on the lift an early car that was Turboed and had been undersealed with Schultz with a compressor looked great underneath. The other car was done with chassis wax 2 years ago and that was needing a top up and but you never know if there is water getting behind the Schultz.

One of the Mk2.5 cars a 2005 Arctic was purchased new by the owner when the Mk3 was coming out, he got a good discount. it was undersealed a few years ago. It looks mint but the offside rear sill arches have started to come through. The front chassis rails are mint still. Well worth a replacement rear wing.
The other Mk2.5 needs an offside rear wing within the year, a nearside front chassis rail within the year and a the offside front chassis rail is better so maybe two years in that.

Most of the Mk3's were on the lift. A 2012 was starting to have a few rust spots underneath. The 2006 and 2007 cars were getting crusty but nothing a day clean-up, rust converter, prime and goo would not sort.

A 2010 Mk3.5 was worse underneath and will need nearer 2 days to sort out underneath if it is a keeper.

We changed the engine oil on a Mk3 BBS Turbo and the diff oil the 2012 Mk3. One of the Mk1's had a sticky offside front caliper.

The day finished at around 3:30 pm.
