Looking for some places to visit - Skye and surrounding area

Postby 71NotOut » Mon Mar 21, 2016 11:18 am

We have booked a campervan for 2 weeks in July.

The last time we had one, we went to Dornoch, across to Gairloch then down to Aviemore.

This time, we plan to go to Skye, then get the ferry across to Lewis & Harris and visit some friends on Bernera.

I would love to go over Applecross as well, but I am not sure if the road is suitable? It is a smaller 4 berth van this time rather than the larger 6 berth we had last time, with smaller roads in mind!

Any places you can recommend to a)visit, or b)stop over for the night?

You cannot beat personal recommendations so thought i'd ask in here.

Cheers,
Steven

Can't really think of anywhere off hand, but I will say you will be fine going to applecross over the bealach Na ba as the corners have been widened, it won't be an issue at all.

Enjoy your trip

We stayed a weekend in Plockton a few years ago, lovely place to relax and Calum's seal trip is a must. Just before Skye bridge so not much of a detour for you.

Hi Steven
when the club was up at Applecross last year one of our members slashed a tyre taken evasive action from some idiots on motorbikes coming from the opposite direction. We managed to get him to the inn at Applecross. We passed the recovery lorry coming over the bealach Na ba, so I think you will be fine with your campervan

Last time I went to Applecross (May 2015) there was a mobile bank coming up the other way.

This was a video of the return leg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3iyOO1GapI

Thanks - I think it's a myth it's ever sunny though

Hoping to be back that way at the end of April, I'll make sure the dashcam is still hooked up.

Hi - have a look at the thread I have just revived (A Scottish Road Trip?) - as I described my itinerary and posted photos.

Kylesku Hotel is a must if you like your seafood. Off the beaten track a bit are Mellon Udrigle and Clashnessie Bay but worth a visit

Thanks folks, the itinerary is shaping up nicely!

Starting off with 3 days in Skye, then taking the ferry over to Lewis & Harris to visit friends on Great Bernera.

Then heading to Horgabost campsite for another few days on Lewis then ferry back to Skye then home.
