Mk1 1.8 ride v 91H 1.6

Postby Stonehaven » Mon Nov 15, 2004 7:56 pm

I got my Mk1 California on the road yesterday and drove it from Aberdeen to Helensburgh and back today. Runs great and the difference in performace between 115hp 1.6 and the 1.8 is really noticable. However, one thing I didn't expect was how much firmer the California ride is compared with the 1.6.
Until today I had hardly driven any miles in a 1.8 since I sold my wife's Gleneagles in 2000. I don't remember the Gleneagles being particularly firm, but as I didn't drive any MX5s for 2 years after selling it I can't really compare it to my 91H 1.6. Anyone any thoughts on this?
For info both cars run on T1-Ss, the California 195/50 15s and the 1.6 205/45 16s.

More bracing on the shell of the 1.8 makes it feel a bit firmer, but not hugely stiffer. Maybe not stock suspension? or tired suspension on the 1.6?

I will have the California with me at the weekend so perhaps someone can give me a second opinion.

Stonehaven , I have a MK1 California as well but as a recent MX5 owner I don't really have anything to compare it too. Mine has replacement springs , but I'm told they were the same rate as originals , and adjustable Konis.

My impression of the ride genarlly is it's hard , but haven't played about with the shocks. It's fine on smoothish roads but I don't think the suspension is doing the job over lumpy stuff.

Some mk1's had suspension options when new like Bilsteins etc, certainly stiffer.....could be that, although i get slated in the National Forum regarding this as apparantley the difference is "undetectable"...why bother changing then if you ask me  .Of course you have driven both 1.6 and 1.8 and they are a different car to drive.Mine has the above lowered Bilstein package and is like night and day to standard Roadsters.Much firmer and stiffer and of course bumpier :).............maybe tired suspension like Richard says if the car has original suspension.I can only comment on my own car against a standard 1.6.....totally different driving experience, performance and handling :)

I had the alignment done at the tech day this afternoon and then drove home to the NE - the ride of the 1.8 is now seems feels much more like the 1.6.
With snow on the road between Doune and Callander and then a boring journey up a wet dual carriageway to Stonehaven, I haven't really had the chance to check my 'feeling'. Can a car being out of alignment have a noticable impact on ride quality?
I will have to wait until the weather clears up to find out if there really has been a change.
