Square Plates

Postby kristoff » Wed Sep 15, 2004 8:27 pm

Does anyone know if it's illegal to have the square shaped two line plate on the front of the car as well as the back.

As far as I know, it IS illegal. However, it's not viewed in the same category as robbing banks.

Thanks for that folks, what's the feeling amongst MX5 purists, square plate or traditional UK configuration?

In terms of looks, I don't think it matters on the MX-5 what you go for . However, if you've got a UK style plate at the back I'd keep it that way rather than trying to fit a square plate in there.

Now, have you ever seen a square plate on a Fiesta, escort, or other similar munter motor? Now that's wrong!

First i knew it was illegal?,my car had a square 2 line plate at the front when i bought it......you can check my avatar out on the National forum to see this........i now have a stick on plate at the front and a black and silver square plate at the back  ........i know these are illegal from 1974 onwards.according to JR Har.....i mean David 8) from the National site.If you need a square plinth for your square plate if you go ahead with this choice,i have one in the shed that i will never put back on,your welcome to it as i never had any probs with the legalities of it ,and till today never knew otherwise :)

Just visited the DVLA site and it tells of all the lagalities of number plates, but no mention of the shape of the plate, just the font ,spacing etc.

Damn, that'll be why I failed the Law exam then
My view that it was illegal was because that's what I'd heard - it was to do with the inability of speed cameras to read them allegedly. Since I don't drive in manner that will set them off anyway, I have no idea if that is true or not.

Cheers for that H. I'm off home for lunch so I'll have a crack at sending it again. Just taken delivery of my tonneau cover so I want to put that on too.
