Rust On Passenger Side Rear Quarter Panel

Postby tjam2016 » Thu Jan 21, 2016 1:16 pm

Hey Guys

I've been looking to get some help and advice, I have a NB Roadster RS 1.8 (affectionately named "Millie") who has had some problems that I am slowly working through all her problems. First she had a broken alternator and thus a faulty battery but the next big problem is the rust on the side of her (See Pictures below).

As far as I'm aware the rust has yet penetrated deep enough to create a hole but there is a lot of cracking on the outside of the panel and that's slightly intimidating as I don't want it to be a huge repair. Could anyone give me any advice on how bad it is? And who I can go to get it sorted/what I need to do to sort it? The sills are perfect on her (which was a massive relief) and there is a tiny bit of warping/bubbling (barely anything) on the inner arch at the top of the arch where the rear quarter panel meets the outer arch.

I am currently a Student at Edinburgh University so I really hope it's not extortionately expensive!

Many Thanks in advance to anyone who's able to offer a helping hand!

Kindest Regards
Tom

It needsa new rear half wing with the tail part of the sill.

It is a very common replacement on Mk1 and Mk2 cars.

The panel itself is about £110 from mx5parts but a local bodyshop supplier may well be a bit less expensive.

http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/rear-wing-whe ... -1255.html

The full panel is nearer £300.

If one is gone the other is on the way out as they rust from the inside out.

Cost of a bodyshop to do the full job about £400 a side.

Before looking at that take the engine undertray off and look at the front chassis rails!

Bad news I'm afraid.

Thank you very much for that! I am genuinely very worried about that, incase you pull back the outer layers of the arch to find a completely rusted inside sill...

Very very concerned! Do you know anywhere in Scotland that can do a good replacement or bodywork?

Tom,
To be pretty candid about it, by the time the rot has erupted to that extent, it'll be well shot around the inner cills & double skin inner arches.
Been there, wrote the T shirt, got the flesh wounds!
Nowt less than a full re-metalling with new skins and a lot of inner welding with replacement bits..or very clever scratch built parts will eradicate it. Then..there the pre-prep & painting. Eddie's right...around £400.00 per side...minimum.
Also, I'd get Millie up in the air, drop the engine tray, take a very big screwdriver, hit the chassis legs real hard with an even bigger mallet to see if you have much left in the way of chassis legs before you spend anything. Why? Well they are double-skinned, and what appears to be surface rot is'nt. Usually.
Here's mine.

@OldSpice Was that second picture (the shiny chassis rail) what was on the car originally and then you found the rot underneath??

No, that shiny one is the complete OEM replacement unit, including the suspension turret, after it had been grafted in.

In our case, the engine mounts were dodgy, so nothing else but a full structural renewal would have ensured 100% frontal accident integrity...according to a very experienced (retired) VOSA engineer local to me. My job was before a rash of repair aftermarket sections were available. Some, in my opinion, are very good. Some, you may as well use No More Nails & Bacofoil.
