Car rattling underneath. 2006 MK3

Postby L9XSS » Sat May 23, 2015 9:57 am

Some noise from under the car, checked the exhaust is fully secure, could it be anti roll bar or drop links?
Diff oil, gearbox oil has all been changed.
Anyone had similar on a mk3?

Yes a few things.

If it is a 2 litre the gearbox undertray is metal and held in by 10mm af nuts and bolts that can loosen.

Also take a large breaker bar with a socket on it the size of the antiroll bar drop link nuts and give it some welly.

It tends to be the top joint on the drop links.

Sometimes it is down to worn pads rattling about in the caliper.

Thanks Eddie, could it be the sliding caliper pins?
Going to get the car jacked up and have a look.

As mentioned, drop links are a good suspect..

Now if you lived further north I could have a look but I do not think it is sticking pins that cause the noise.

Also look for exhaust heat shields both on the exhaust and on the body.

Look in the springs for things floating about in there that are hard plastic or tin covers.

Does the rattling stop when you brake?

Mine (Mk1) rattled going over bumps, rough roads, etc. As eddie said, it was the brake pads rattling about in their carriers, in my case, because the springs were missing that hold them in place.

Easy to tell, it stops when you brake.

Or something loose inside the exhaust? Starts/stops with changes in flow through the exhaust (acceleration/deceleration). You would have noticed this though, I think.

Good luck.

Just noticed, post was two months ago. Been catching up on the forum. Maybe useful info for others though?
