Oil question for MK3

Postby L9XSS » Tue May 19, 2015 8:16 pm

I'm sure it's been asked before but was looking for some informed advice. Higher mileage MK3 (90,000 miles on an 06 plate).
What grade of oil should I be using? I'm aware of a few cars running very low on oil and causing big end failures/knocking engines. Want to keep my 1.8 in tip top condition and wanted your thoughts on brand and grade etc at this mileage?
Many thanks.

The link below takes you to a used oil analysis of a 120,000 mile MK3, you will have to log in to Miata.net to read the UOA.

It is just a perfect report, if you do not speak UOA.

In the states Mazda spec 5W/20 and this is what this car was using.

In the UK as there was no availability of XW/20 oils, Mazda spec, a 5W/30 A5/B5 oil. There is no reason what so ever not to use the UK spec recommendation.

The car takes 4.5 litres, therefore that makes Castrol a non runner as they sell in 4 litre tubs so you would need an expensive 1 litre bottle as well.

So buy any 5W/30 A5/B5 oil, if you want to waste your money go to Opie Oils and buy one of their £50 pots of oil. Otherwise go to Halfords or your local motor factor and buy the cheapest 5W/30 A5/B5 and a filter

Also 3 litres of 75W/90 gear oil spec GL5 that will do both the gearbox and the diff as it is a 1.8 different for a 6 speed 2 litre Mk3.

1.5 litres of brake fluid as that will not have been changed in a while.

When were the plugs and air filter last .

Eddie, fantastic post, very informative, thanks. Didnt think about the gearbox oil too, but thats a great shout. Not sure about the brake fluid and spark plugs, will trawl thru. The service history and speak with the previous owner in detail.
Many thanks.
