bleed nipples

Postby hold on tight » Sat Apr 11, 2015 6:05 pm

Quite impressed that I managed to get the bleed nipples out of the front calipers this afternoon. I don't think anybody has been near them in many years. I couldn't quite work out what thread they are, to replace them; - they seemed to be something between an M6 and an M7, - they're not some daft imperial size, are they?

No they are metric if you go on to
http://www.speedbleeder.com/size.htm

and some of the other pages on the site you will get the size there you also have to look at the tread pitch not just the diameter.

It appears they are different threads front to rear. M8 x 1.0 front and M7 x 1.0 rear. Now that's handy!!!!!
Anyway, I've ordered this kit;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261633671224?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I'll be replacing all four when they arrive, since they were in a bit of a state due to lack of attention by previous owners, and the fact that these cars sure know how to RUST!
At least the nipples came out, albeit with a blow torch and a lot of WD40, which is a pleasant change when you're used to working on Peugeots with their aluminum calipers and steel nipples; - once those bad boys seize, they are NOT coming out!

Welcome to MX5 bleed nipples.

The front on a Mk 1 or 2 are M8 diameter 1mm thread pitch with a length of 35.5mm

The standard 8mm bleed nipple is M8 x 1.25mm pitch x 28mm long so the standard nipple will not fit an Mk1 or 2 front.

The rear is standard.

The Mk1 and 2 use M7 x1mm pitch with a standard length.

The Mk3 has the same non standard front but the rear is standard with a slight length reduction.

So just different enough not to be able to buy the front nipples from a local motor factor.

Perfect! Six quid on ebay.

All fitted, brakes bled, and refilled with DOT5 fluid.
I think the car deserves a wee run on the East Fortune outing, now.
