Remote Key Broken in Two

Postby dvd8n » Sat Mar 28, 2015 3:11 pm

My wife managed to break her key in half (or the two halves have come apart - I'm not sure which).

She came home with the remote control half but the flipper part with the key blade in it has gone.

I thought that all tha I needed was a new blade but have read things that suggest that the immobiliser transponder may be in the part with the key blade, rather than the part with the remote. But I'm not sure.

It's the 1.8 2008 model.

Any one know? Or have any useful advice?

The 2008 car has a two part key.

The remote bit with the buttons that you have in your hand undamaged. In my key the plastic bit that holds both section together is iffy and sometimes they come apart in the ignition lock so check that.

The key blade that is broken. I believe that the transponder that talks to the imobiliser is in the key blade but all may not be lost.

A complete new key plus teaching to the car is in the region of £250 to £300 all in from Mazda and they need the car for an hour or so to do the coding.

In your cas they may be able just to supply the keyblade and teach that to the car. Guess the cost a bit over £100.

Now the cheap skate way.

I assume you have two keys and that one is still intact.

Take that to Timpsons and they will cut a key for you from that pattern but it is a key only with no remote section. They will also be able to read the transponder number and copy that to the recut key.

You put that on the same key ring as the remote with the broken key blade.

Cost at Timpsons varies but budget £35 to £45 depending if they have a special offer on at the time.

So do you have a broken key blade or just a weak clip that keeps them together.

Basically we have this bit still atatched to the keychain. It's the 4 button version. But It still works as a remote. It's hard to tell whether the clips have broken or it has just fallen apart.

I think that it may be the cheapskate way unless my wife's desparate to spend £300.

Just have to hope that we manage to look after the other key 'till we get a chance to go to Timpson's.

Thanks for replying by the way.

I just told my wife £300.

From the look on her face I think we'll be going for the cheapskate option.

Being a cheapskate is an honarable way of doing things!

You have a weak clip between the two sections and one just disapeared.

I would get a 14mm socket and ratchet and take the drivers seat out . I bet you find it under the seat. I could not find a set of Mk3 seats until I could lift the seat.

Another cheapskate way.

Buy this key blade on ebay as it has a built in transponder. £14

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-Flip-Ke ... 2c94a58b76

Then get the locak key cutting shop to reproduce the shape with their grinder say £5.

Then take both keys to Mazda to have them recoded to the car.

Phone up Mazda to find out the cost first.

Use glue to put them together so you need to put in a new battery in the remote part,
