Hood catches

Postby hold on tight » Sat Dec 20, 2014 1:49 pm

The hood catches aren't catching properly on my Sport. I have adjusted the threaded adjusters full extents in both directions, but it doesn't make any difference, - handles won't stay in position. I assume they are supposed to go over-centre, but these catches don't. Needless to say the release buttons don't do anything, because there is nothing to release if the catches haven't locked.

Anybody come across this?

You can strip the catch and sort it or get a good second hand pair from Autolink and they will come with the matching parts that are attached to the screen or for that matter you can buy new parts fro mx5parts etc.

Yes it is a common complaint aand they are easy to change.

What is it that goes wrong with the latches? There's nothing obviously broken or worn on mine, but they just don't want to go over-centre. I'd rather have a go at fixing them than shelling out 70 quid for second hand latches from Autolink.

Yeah, Thanks Richard, I found that one but I'm sure that's not the issue with mine.
I think this link is the cure I need; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dtdQiDcJyw.
I had misunderstood the operation of it; I thought it was a problem about not going over-centre, but that's not how it works, - it's a latching mechanism. The handle isn't coming anywhere close to the latching point, so it's not a problem about the latch not rotating far enough. I know this one looks a bit extreme, but I can see how it would work on mine. I'll find out tomorrow!!!!

The post you suggested, Richardn was to do with a bit of fine adjustment to the mechanism, but as shown below, this one needed a bit more than adjustment, - the release catch was missing the handle by 3mm.

So I've done the mod shown this video,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dtdQiDcJyw.

It's a bit dramatic, but with a 3mm gap to fill, there didn't seem to be any other way!

Anyway, both sides are done, and appear to be holding. Hopefully I'll ge a better long term solution for it.
